Deputy Director - Operations

The Role

As ThoughtBox continues to grow in scale and impact, we are looking for a key individual to join the team to help with the operational and strategic development of the organisation. As a social enterprise, our focus moving forward is to both strengthen the foundations of our business and continue building a movement to transform education.

You will be working closely alongside our Director Rachel Musson with the day-to-day running of the organisation, releasing more of Rachel’s time to focus on advocacy and outreach. Your role will include the following as an example:

• Supporting the management of our core educator team (three p/t staff)
• Organising our different operational systems and work-stream strategies
• Working on our financial growth strategies and connecting with grant funds and opportunities
• Connecting with our different partners and stakeholders
• Supporting the general running of the organisation to move into the next level of growth

As a community interest company, our income stream is a combination of income from our resources and training alongside grant funding. We are looking to strengthen our financial foundations moving forward to allow us to continue mapping to our theory of change and you will play a key role in this part of our development.

When joining the team, you will be working alongside our UK educator team, plus our wonderful international freelancers and board of non-executive directors.

This is an exciting and challenging role for a socially, culturally and environmentally conscious individual with significant experience in project management, operations and - most importantly - the belief and drive to shape a new future for education.

What you’ll need...

• Excellent organisation and administration skills.
• Experience effectively managing projects and people, including budget and strategic development.
• Experience in grant fund applications and financial forecasting.
• Exceptional communication skills, with an ability to get on with everyone (we’re a very relational organisation!)
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively with a remote team.
• Innovative thinking with an ability to adapt to challenges and willingness to support across different roles.
•  Fluency and accuracy in spoken and written English.
• Excellent IT proficiency and communication skills (ideally with social media experience).
• A strong interest in (and passion for) education, climate and making the world a better place.

Nice to haves...

• Experience in education.
• Confidence speaking to a wide range of stakeholders and partners.
• A good eye for design.
• Experience with working remotely.
• Strong understanding of the climate emergency.
• Ideally located in the South West and able to meet in the Totnes area once per week.

• A competitive salary based on experience. We have a total budget of £37,000 per annum for this role, with the day / hours allocation dependent upon experience.
