The Deputy Director of Climate Mitigation works with the Climate Mitigation Director in the New York Division to support achieving the Nature Conservancy’s mitigation, conservation and clean energy goals as part of the Climate Mitigation Team. The Deputy Director works with a cross-functional program team engaged in science, policy and regulation, energy, conservation, marketing, communications and fund raising efforts to achieve outcomes in New York and beyond. They develop innovative scientific methods, analyses, tools and frameworks to address mitigation and the natural system needs, engage local community support for local climate mitigation/conservation efforts, and implement innovative programs and solutions with internal and external stakeholders to conserve and protect natural resources.

The preferred work location for this position is Albany, NY, but may be negotiable at other established Conservancy offices within New York State or the northeast.

The preferred candidate will be comfortable with both independent and team-based work, as well as duties that span from day to day coordination to long term project implementation. We are looking for smart, entrepreneurial, and emotionally-intelligent go-getters who can manage and foster solid relationships externally and internally for lasting success. We appreciate collaborative approaches and encourage innovative ideas and recommendations.  

 

The ideal candidate will have a background and track record that includes: 

  • BA/BS degree and 5 years’ experience in conservation and clean energy practice or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience managing complex or multiple projects, including staffing, workloads and finances under deadlines.
  • Supervisory experience, including motivating, leading, setting objectives and managing performance.
  • Experience in partnership development with non-profit partners, community groups and/or government agencies. 
  • Experience negotiating.
  • Multi-lingual and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  • Valid Drivers’ License.
