Orleans Parish Prison Reform Coalition (OPPRC) seeks a passionate and self-motivated full-time organizer to build strategic grassroots organizing campaigns, expand membership, build leadership development programs for members, and build and fortify alliances and partnerships. Our ideal applicant will strongly support building a cross-issue political analysis with a multi-racial team to advance OPPRC’s mission and the work of decarcerating New Orleans. This individually will work closely with another organizer on the team.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Drive Inclusive Campaigns

  • Develop and oversee the implementation of strategic grassroots organizing campaigns that will win concrete improvements in the lives of our most impacted members.
  • Develop all campaign goals and strategies through a collaborative process that includes the perspectives, wisdom, and strategy advice of our members, allies, staff, and partners.
  • Facilitate group and individual meetings as necessary to ensure that campaign goals are inclusive and that progress is being made. 
  • Support the use of direct action as necessary and strategic to advance campaigns and build power.
  • Participate in outreach and base-building efforts through door-knocking, tabling, canvassing, and lit-drops.
  • Motivate individuals and groups of community leaders to take action.


Build capacity within the membership 

  • Support, expand, and deepen member leadership and leadership structures through individual dialogue, membership meetings, leadership meetings, and other work. 
  • Identify and support development of other leaders to guide and lead campaigns 
  • Develop and build leadership committees to drive campaigns through an inclusive process that generates bold action by developing membership organizing and advocacy skills to educate the public and progress policy efforts.
  • Develop the leadership of members to share their stories to progress efforts to decarcerate New Orleans and improve jail conditions. 


Community Education

  • Identify, contact and establish meaningful relationships with community members, partners, and policy allies to support campaigns, our members, and core organizing work.
  • Educate members, partners, and the community about our core issues.
  • Work with the staff and partners to organize actions, press events, and prepare testimony for public hearings. 


Information gathering

  • Collect and record data about jail and police interactions to inform community education and campaign work of the organization.


REQUIREMENTS

  • Demonstrated experience as an organizer at a grassroots-based organization
  • Supervision experience
  • Knowledge of criminal legal system issues; previous experience organizing criminal justice or detention issues
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills (listening, speaking, and writing) 
  • Ability to organize community members and partners to take action on multiple issues for local campaigns 
  • Experience working independently and with a diverse team 
  • Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment
  • Detail-oriented and solution-oriented 
  • Experience in creating and following through on a work plan
  • Willingness to travel for trainings and meetings 
  • Ability to work long and irregular hours, including some nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Own reliable transportation with current insurance and be comfortable driving in that car with members
  • Ability to use a computer for word processing and email along with comfort using the internet and social media posting


*Please note that the individual hired for this position will have to engage in door-to-door canvassing and literature drops.
