About NYC Kids RISE 

The NYC Kids RISE Save for College Program is a universal, community-driven wealth-building platform that expands access to mainstream financial products, puts real financial assets in the hands of low-income families and communities of color, regardless of their immigration status, provides financial education for families and students, and brings schools and communities together to support all of their children’s futures. NYC Kids RISE is in the fifth year of operations in the geographic area of School District 30 in Queens - one of the most diverse school districts in the country - more than 13,000 students (~95% of all rising First, Second, Third, and Fourth Graders) have a NYC Scholarship Account with nearly $7M accumulated to date. Based on the success of the pilot, the Program is now expanding citywide this school year.


Through the Program, every student enrolled in a participating NYC public elementary school (including charter schools who choose to participate), starting in kindergarten, automatically receives an NYC Scholarship Account invested in the NY 529 Direct Plan plan with a $100 seed deposit and up to $200 in early rewards. Their families can open and connect their own college savings account (separate from the scholarship account) and start saving their own money in the ways and amounts that make sense for them, building financial capability and stability. At the same time, communities can contribute to groups of these NYC Scholarship Accounts as both a targeted and universal platform for community-driven asset-building in every neighborhood. By combining seed scholarships, family savings, community investments, and funding streams from every level, the platform can build meaningful assets for public school students. These accounts, and the accompanying program supports, enable families, schools, local organizations, businesses, anchor institutions, financial institutions, philanthropy, and the public sector to work together to build assets in students’ accounts and strengthen social capital by supporting expectations of success across the neighborhood. 


NYC Kids RISE manages the Save for College Program in partnership with the NYC Department of Education and the City of New York, with founding support from the Gray Foundation.

District Lead (Deputy Director) - School District 30

The Save for College Program began as a pilot program five years ago in the neighborhoods of School District 30. ( East Elmhurst, Jackson Heights, Astoria, Woodside, Sunnyside, Long Island City, and Corona in Queens). Today over 13,000 students - 96% of all rising 1st through 4th graders - in the district, have accumulated nearly $7M in assets for their college and career training. For more information about the School District 30 pilot, please visit d30pilot.nyckidsrise.org As a result of the success of the pilot and the collaboration of hundreds of stakeholders within the geographic area of the pilot, this school year all Kindergarteners across the City in public school (including participating charter schools) will now have access to the Save for College Program.


District Lead Position Description

A central tenet of the Save for College Program’s approach is that the ecosystem in each neighborhood impacts a child’s economic opportunity. This ecosystem includes one’s home, school, after-school program, religious or spiritual center, local financial institutions, community organizations, commercial corridors, community centers, neighbors, employers (as they get older), and the belief systems that are shared within and across these institutions about the student, the family, and the community at large. These ecosystems look and operate differently in each community. Starting in District 30, in each participating school district as the Save for College Program expands, NYC Kids RISE will work to bring together local stakeholders from across philanthropic, educational, social service, faith-based, business, anchor institution, and civic communities to further institutionalize the ways in which the Program can support communities to build meaningful financial assets and affirm expectations for all our children. 


Through an interdisciplinary neighborhood-based, networked approach, and building on the assets within communities and best practices in NYC and beyond, NYC Kids RISE seeks an exceptional relationship builder, project manager, organizer and communicator to serve as the Founding District Lead for School District 30 and advance a citywide model for a neighborhood network. Supported by a cross functional team of NYC Kids RISE staff, the District Lead’s responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

  • Support neighborhood stakeholders (eg: Resident Associations, community based organizations, schools, civic association, anchor institutions, businesses) to further institutionalize the Save for College Program within their individual organizations, neighborhoods and networks;
  • Engage and cultivate neighborhood network members and secure individual commitments to advance individual and collective goals including district-wide public awareness & engagement campaign, institutionalizing the Save for College Program into schools and other community based service-provider offerings, raising Community Scholarships, and supporting families to complete the foundational programmatic steps;
  • Codify and implement a plan for the school year to achieve the Save for College Program outcomes for the district;
  • Organize and convene stakeholders to move towards the formalization of a “neighborhood network” to build collective awareness and shared identity and connectivity around shared goals;  
  • Support individual members to meet annual goals as well as capturing lessons learned and best practices to further refine model and approach for District 30 and other school districts throughout the City. Support could include any or all of the following: 
  • Provide short 1:1 “technical assistance” sessions by appointment for questions and requests for support that require problem solving / brainstorming; 
  • Host scheduled group Q&A sessions throughout the course of the year and manage logistics of promoting, scheduling and running virtual sessions as well as data entry and follow up; 
  • Answer all incoming questions from any community stakeholder in the neighborhoods of School District 30 that come via the NYC Kids RISE hotline or schools email address.
  • Plan and execute up to two neighborhood network convenings each year, staff advisory boards and committees as makes sense;
  • Document all interactions with community stakeholders in our relationship management system and complete follow up from initial interactions as necessary
  • Support facilitation of formal virtual (and in the future in person) community stakeholder and neighborhood network member trainings held throughout the year and conduct necessary individual follow up and data entry.
  • Submit regular reports summarizing capacity building support provided, progress toward goals, analyze trends, and make recommendations for future neighborhood network support; work with supervisor to implement these recommendations.
  • Work with Senior Data Manager and supervisor to devise community stakeholder tracking systems and reports and devise tools for internal performance management for the 2021-2022 school year. 
  • Participate and share in the organization’s work to advance racial equity and anti-oppression in the organization’s and program’s operations and practices; proactively identify opportunities to advance the development of an anti-racist organization; share and solicit ongoing feedback and conversations to advance this work.
  • Maintain, and support other staff and volunteers to maintain, strict adherence to NYC Kids RISE data security and privacy policies.


Qualifications

  • At least 8 years of experience in relationship management, community organizing, performance management, economic and community development activities, education, or financial empowerment service-delivery, or comparable experience;
  • Exceptional judgement;
  • Knowledge of, and demonstrated interest in in working with networks, collective impact, coalition building;
  • Familiarity with the neighborhoods and social infrastructure of East Elmhurst, Corona, Long Island City, Astoria, Woodside, Sunnyside, Jackson Heights; 
  • Superb communication and relationship building skills, including writing, public speaking, and presentation to diverse audiences;
  • Adaptable, flexible and effective problem solver in fast-paced settings;
  • Proven project manager, highly organized, good attention to detail;
  • Ability to analyze trends and distill observations into actionable recommendations;
  • Bilingual in Spanish preferred; 
  • Experience with training and capacity building for diverse stakeholders is preferred;
  • Experience in a start-up setting is preferred. 


Due to COVID-19, the application process for this role will be conducted virtually. The entire team is currently working remotely and depending on the timing of this hire, the District Lead will likely begin this position remotely as well. The office is otherwise based in Long Island City (Queens, NY), and the entire team is expected to return to the office once health conditions allow.
