About Start Small Think Big:

Start Small Think Big is a non-profit on a mission to catalyze entrepreneurship in marginalized communities. Founded twelve years ago in New York City, we have successfully expanded our work throughout New York, California, and D.C.. We are now in the midst of another period of rapid growth and expansion. We are working to replicate our model nationally and grow existing programs to serve more significant numbers of entrepreneurs. As we scale our work, we are engaged in an intentional process to identify, understand, and address bias at all levels and advance equity, from the inside out.

In order to connect small business owners with the strongest pro bono legal, financial and marketing support to transform their growing businesses, build wealth for themselves and their families, and create jobs for others in their communities, Start Small Think Big has:

  • Partnered with the majority of the top 100 U.S. law firms, including Cooley, Wilson Sonsini, Fenwick & West, Simpson Thacher, Weil Gotshal, Cleary Gottlieb, Debevoise & Plimpton.
  • Partnered with some of the biggest and most well-respected financial and marketing corporations, including eBay, PayPal, American Express, Morgan Stanley, Google, Goldman Sachs, Group Nine Media
  • Secured significant support for our work from some of the largest and most forward-thinking foundations in the space, including Kauffman, JPMorgan Chase, and Citi.

In 2020, Start Small supported 3,500 businesses across our three tiers of programming. This year, we are on track to support 4500 small businesses nationwide. Over the next two years, we are working to build the infrastructure and programming to allow us to scale to serve tens of thousands of small businesses nationwide.

Legal Program Director Position:

We are seeking a mission-focused, innovative Legal Program Director to help expand the breadth and depth of our legal services. Our Legal Program is our oldest and largest program and includes legal and non-legal staff charged with ensuring our small business clients have a sound legal infrastructure for their businesses, providing a stable foundation upon which to grow. This position offers a unique opportunity to help shape our programming to enable the long term success of our small business clients. You will be a key member of the leadership team and responsible for overseeing the strategy and execution of our Legal Program, ensuring that our clients receive high quality, culturally appropriate legal support and that we deepen our partnerships with law firms and corporate legal teams to activate programming. 

This is a dynamic role -- you might be designing a new programming slate one day, leading a workshop or collaborating with a corporate partner the next. The ideal candidate is an experienced lawyer, with time spent in both corporate law and in pro bono legal services, LSO, or the non profit space. You are someone who balances strategy and execution, adept at collaborating with legal and non-legal colleagues, and brings a creative approach to the work -- you have the confidence and clarity to set a vision and the operational know-how to bring that vision to life. Additionally, you are an organized self-starter with strong communication skills and the ability to motivate culturally diverse teams and foster an inclusive work culture. Working closely with other leadership team members, you will co-create equity strategies and build organization-wide systems to collect input, analyze data with an equity lens, and report on progress to ensure accountability to our Equity & Inclusion Action Plan. 

You should be comfortable with change, adept at prioritizing for execution, and are an equal parts leader and team player, with a roll-up-their-sleeves attitude. Most importantly, you are passionate about supporting small businesses, social justice, and equity. This position reports directly to the Chief Operating Officer. 


Key Responsibilities:

Program Strategy & Operations

Strategy & Implementation: 

  • Set strategic vision and objectives for the Legal Program that are responsive to the organizational strategy, client needs, industry trends, and current climate
  • Strengthen the program’s overall quality, in-house expertise, effectiveness and efficiency
  • Develop the program’s capacity to expand its impact in terms of number of clients served and its ability to scale into new jurisdictions 
  • Establish and stay accountable to program KPIs and collaborate with the Impact team to assess program success and client experience & outcomes
  • Create a tactical plan to execute against program strategy, ensuring programming and service offering is highly responsive, the client experience is best in class, and operational effectiveness is in place

Operational Excellence: 

  • Contribute to development and roll out of technology solutions to our partners, clients, and pro bono volunteers 
  • Provide substantive feedback from legal professionals and program team to the Technology team to drive product improvements; partner with clients and volunteers to test and improve technology offerings that drive increases in quality and quantity of legal services provided
  • Refine systems and processes to support programming/services and volunteer engagements for continued growth and scale
  • Ensure effective, efficient, and professional coordination of all aspects of legal referrals and placements of client matters with pro bono attorneys 

Reporting & Impact:

  • Leverage insights and data to inform program strategy, priorities, and recommended changes


Partner Management & Integration 

  • Ensure Law Firm and Corporate partners remain highly engaged and have a positive experience, and that the Legal Program successfully bridges the gap between client/program needs and volunteer capacity:
  • Nurture and grow relationships with firms, corporate partners, legal service providers, community partners, and other relevant stakeholders 
  • Collaborate with Business Development team on partner outreach and development strategies 
  • Collaborate with Community Engagement team to support partnerships and programming with community organizations and other stakeholders 


People Management

  • Oversight of all legal program staff, including Associate Director, Staff Attorney(s), Legal Fellows, Operational staff, and interns 
  • Provide training and substantive legal supervision to attorneys and legal fellows
  • Foster a culture of collaboration and inclusivity across the team 
  • Coach direct reports, developing individual strengths and addressing opportunities for growth
  • Establish clear individual goals that ladder up to overall team objectives, and evaluate individual’s performance


Special Projects

  • Collaborate across teams on special projects, with an emphasis on translating legal expertise and requirements for non-legal audiences to support cross-functional initiatives 


Preferred Skills/Qualifications:

  • J.D. from an accredited law school; member in good standing to the New York Bar or eligible for admission to the New York Bar. Highly prefer candidates who are also barred in CA, DC and/or DMV areas. 
  • 6+ years of post-law school, relevant legal experience
  • Experience performing legal work at a community economic development organization, LSO, and/or corporate law firm experience
  • High level of computer proficiency including familiarity with Google Apps and MS Office, Experience with Trello and Zoom a plus
  • Ability to communicate with diverse groups, including Start Small’s clients, pro bono coordinators and volunteer attorneys at large corporate law firms, and other external constituencies, such as community and governmental organizations, civil legal service providers, and press
  • Entrepreneurial acumen and drive, ability to see and respond to opportunities or challenges
  • Experience developing or directly with and/or supporting new product development and to-market efforts, e.g. experience in-house at a technology start-up; and/or experience practicing law with start-ups or in the entrepreneurship or small business spaces, preferred
  • A demonstrated understanding of the role of structural racism and other biases in our society and a strong commitment to address these impacts within the context of this role
  • Strong relationship-building, communication, and conflict resolution skills, including the ability to work effectively across cultural differences and a demonstrated commitment to ongoing learning and reflection on one’s personal identity, while always maintaining a strong level of professionalism and tact
  • Strong organizational and time management skills; ability to prioritize and work smartly, identifying high-value projects that will have the greatest business impact
  • Demonstrated ability to attract, develop, and motivate culturally diverse teams with a high level of collaboration and accountability to organizational values in action
  • Deep commitment to building a positive work culture that encourages feedback related to practices including but not limited to equity and inclusion
  • Spanish proficiency preferred, other language fluency highly desirable
