Location: Remote, but must be located in or around LA County

Summary: The Local Advocacy Coordinator works with other members of the team to develop LACBC’s on-the-ground organizing presence in local communities where LACBC has Local Chapter and Neighborhood Bike Ambassador programs. They are responsible for engaging and cultivating local leaders, raising the profile of LACBC’s work in priority neighborhoods, mobilizing supporters of safe and equitable streets, and shaping LACBC’s approach to reflect local input and experience. 

The Local Advocacy Coordinator plays an important role in developing and communicating LACBC's infrastructure campaigns and policy platform, including cultivating local leaders to communicate the importance of LACBC’s vision and mission. They are responsible for overseeing the LACBC Local Chapter and Neighborhood Bike Ambassador programs. They build partnerships with diverse individuals, community-based and neighborhood organizations, and local businesses to advocate for improved active transportation infrastructure and policies. They represent the organization with a high level of professionalism, organization, and friendliness. The Local Advocacy Coordinator reports to the Deputy Director.

During the first 6-7 months, as the Local Advocacy Coordinator learns their role, they will work up to 20 hours per week as the Bicycle Operations Assistant for Estolano Advisors, an LACBC partner.

The Bicycle Operations Assistant will provide administrative, operational, and equipment management support for a bike safety education program jointly managed and run by Estolano Advisors (EA), Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition, People for Mobility Justice, and ActiveSGV. This position ensures that all the proper documentation is processed for bike safety classes, community rides, and Safe Routes to School events, coordinating with event facilitators and partner organizations. The Assistant will also be responsible for the maintenance of the inventory of loaner bicycles, helmets, and other equipment at the EA office in Downtown LA and at the off-site storage unit near Union Station. The position is primarily remote, but will require occasional travel within Los Angeles County to coordinate equipment pick-ups with instructors.


Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience (0-1 years) in local organizing preferred 
  • Excellent editing, written and verbal communication skills
  • Valid drivers license and reliable access to vehicle required
  • Ability to lift and move approximately 25 pounds
  • Knowledge of bicycle & pedestrian advocacy 
  • Basic knowledge of bicycle maintenance and repair
  • Self motivated, creative, detail-oriented and energetic
  • Demonstrated commitment to environmental justice, the bicycle movement, and smart growth
  • Experience with engaging local communities on complex issues
  • Experience with low income communities of color preferred
  • Experience with database maintenance and analysis preferred
  • Experience with inventory management and event coordination preferred
  • Proficiency in Spanish written and spoken language preferred
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite and Google applications required
  • Ability and willingness to work in a fast-paced work environment
  • Must thrive on change, innovation, and teamwork

The Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition (LACBC) is a nonprofit organization that promotes bicycling for transportation and recreation throughout LA County’s 88 cities through advocacy, education and outreach. Founded in 1998, LACBC brings together the diverse bicycling community in a united mission to improve the bicycling environment and quality of life for the entire region. Estolano Advisors (EA) is an award-winning, Latina-owned urban planning and public policy firm headquartered in Los Angeles. We work with public agencies, non-profits, philanthropies, and businesses to craft innovative solutions to address complex problems on issues across California and the nation. Our team of technical experts specializes in managing multi-stakeholder processes to address complex public policy, urban planning, and social equity issues. EA has served as the project manager for the bike safety education program since April 2017.


Salary: The position offers $40k-45k annual salary commensurate with experience, plus health insurance benefits, 401(k) retirement plan, paid time off in addition to regular federal/state holidays.


Key Responsibilities:

The Local Advocacy Coordinator is primarily responsible for serving the local chapters and bike ambassador groups by helping to organize and coordinate their efforts while informing the larger strategic goals of LACBC. 

Campaigns and Strategic Initiatives 


  • Develop local champions and chapter/bike ambassador group relationships
  • Educate stakeholders on the positive benefits of active transportation and the impacts of transportation and land use on health and safety. 

  • Identify and document community residents’ perspectives and mobility needs. Work to ensure those stories are being shared with LACBC members, the broader community, and policy makers. 

  • Work with the rest of the LACBC team to organize community events, safety trainings, and bike rides to engage residents and generate enthusiasm for campaigns and programs. 


Local Advocacy Strategy & Community Organizing 


  • Serve the existing local chapters by supervising the organization of regular Chapter Caucus meetings and hosting trainings and an annual retreat.
  • Coordinate communications and efforts with Board Chapter Representative
  • Work with the LACBC team on developing supporting materials, and providing guidance on campaigns.
  • Develop and co-power local champions. Work to grow the Local Chapter Program and engage local advocates by educating community members about planning, developing and sustaining campaigns, how to get involved with their city councils and local elected leaders, how to convene community and campaign meetings, etc. 

  • Identify outreach opportunities to further promote the Local Chapter and Neighborhood Bike Ambassador programs. 


Events

  • Support events and outreach opportunities throughout LACBC’s calendar year. 
  • Support chapter events and outreach opportunities when appropriate.

 Administration

  • Utilize professional and kind customer service and interpersonal skills to interact with consultants, staff, sponsors, etc.
  • Possess excellent written communication and editing skills.
  • Communicate with chapter and bike ambassador group leaders and members in a timely and professional manner.

Computer Skills

  • Utilize computers to communicate, plan, budget and organize projects and events.
  • Leverage technology to support the growth of the chapter and bike ambassador programs.

Problem-Solving Skills

  • Innovative thinking and problem solving skills are required.
  • Must be able to quickly assess complex problems and respond with solutions.

LACBC Organizational Team Work

  • Respond quickly to emails and other queries, attend regular staff meetings, and keep regular records.
  • Attend board meetings, staff retreats and conferences as requested.
  • Respond to requests from your supervisor for special projects, as needed.
  • Work as a team player to fulfill the missions and goals of the organization.


Bicycle Operations Assistant Tasks (temporary only)

  • Track documentation required for virtual and in-person events, including liability waivers,
  • photos, and completed surveys.
  • Assist instructors in the coordination of virtual and in-person events, including event
  • materials and logistics
  • Manage and track inventory and proper organization and storage of bike equipment.
  • Data entry and maintenance for Registration Database, Feedback Survey Responses,
  • and Marketing Referral Data.
  • Oversee bike fleet reservation calendar
  • Draft memos, reports, and other client-related work products.

Other

  • Other duties as assigned
