Communications Director, LA Worker Center Network (LAWCN)

About the Position

The Communications Director is responsible for developing effective messaging and communication strategies to advance the LAWCN mission of storytelling and sharing of low wage workers’ narratives. They must create or oversee the creation of promotional and informative materials the network will send to the public. They will work on all forms of media, including press releases and digital campaigns, print materials, social media, audio and video and more. 

About the Organization

Los Angeles Worker Center Network (LAWCN) mission is to raise the visibility of, and support organizing by, low-wage workers, immigrant and refugee workers, and workers of color in Los Angeles.

Warehouse Worker Resource Center (WWRC) is the fiscal sponsor for LAWCN and the selected candidate for this position would be an employee of WWRC.

WWRC is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3), organization founded in 2011 dedicated to improving working conditions in the warehouse industry in Southern California. We focus on education, advocacy and action to change poor working conditions in the largest hub of warehousing in the country.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Respond to crises or challenging situations quickly and professionally
  • Build relationships with media outlets and relevant partners to expand LAWCN capacity for public relations and publishing of relevant material related to LAWCN policy and campaign goals
  • Manage all public social media for the Network
  • Attend speaking engagements and plan special events
  • Conducting quality control on all communications
  • Manage targeted communications for campaigns
  • Develop relationships and working with media outlets and other companies
  • Work with LAWCN director to establish a year long communications plan
  • Work with member organizations on capacity building training and technical assistance on communications 

REQUIREMENTS

  • Excellent writing skills (a writing sample will be required for your job application)
  • Ability to communicate ideas effectively in person
  • Knowledge of  and relationships with various media sources including some non-English, ethnic-based media 
  • Collaborative team work experience and management
  • Research on policy issues and ability to write talking points 
  • Event organizing 
  • Ability to travel to events in person throughout Southern California
  • Spanish language capacity preferred but not required 
  • English language proficiency 

EDUCATION

  • Undergraduate degree in related field preferred but not required.
  • Some training in media literacy, writing and social media content and design

EXPERIENCE 

  • Prefer 2-5 years of experience in media relations, public relations or communications fields
