    Descrição

    Non-Profit Disability Advocacy Internship Position

Wheeling Forward is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in New York City dedicated to providing guidance and resources to disabled individuals for the purpose of achieving their goals today rather than tomorrow. We provide a vast array of services to disabled individuals, including providing wheelchairs to those in need, mentorship through the initial phase of sustaining a disability, assisting with creating new life goals, helping with returning to college after disability, organizing recreational events, and providing all forms of advocacy for disability-related issues, just to name a few. We work mostly with those who have recently become physically disabled, including paralysis, SCI/D, and other physical impairments, to assist them with navigating the new challenges posed by having a disability so they can achieve their goals and return to living meaningful fulfilling lives. Please visit www.wheelingforward.org or www.facebook.com/WheelingForward to learn more.

We are looking for a Fall/Winter 2024 that is interested in gaining experience with a small and flexible non-profit that needs assistance in expanding our current programs and creating new innovative ways to help the disabled community. We are requesting a 3-6 month commitment of at least 10-15 hours per week with the potential of staying on. This internship will provide great experience for those looking to enter the fields of social work, psychology, physical therapy, non-profit management, law, politics, and other areas.

You will have a unique opportunity to gain experience across the whole spectrum of services that are utilized by disabled individuals, starting from the initial rehabilitation phase at a medical facility, to the transition home, to obtaining in-home services, to creating a new life direction, and, to seeking out how to move forward in that direction. Further, you will get to work on advocacy issues and pushing for important legislation affecting this community.

    Job duties include:

-Providing hands-on logistical assistance at events, support groups, recreational trips, etc.

-Assisting disabled individuals with finding resources to address their needs

-Attending strategy meetings with Wheeling Forward staff and medical staff

-Researching, advocacy writing, and strategic planning on disability issues

-Writing, editing, and proofing organizational communication materials

-Networking with other organizations, as well as with professionals and officials

    -And more!

Requirements include strong passion for and commitment to those living with disabilities and/or disability advocacy; strong writing skills; ability to take initiative and work both independently and on a team; strong communication skills; computer proficiency; college level education or BA/BS degree in progress preferred; prior experience preferred but not required. We would like someone who can start immediately.

A stipend will be considered for the internship (to be determined, approx $500 per 3-month term) and any expenses associated with the internship will be covered. Further, we are happy to help you arrange to receive school credit, fellowships, work-study or any other form of compensation available through your school or other institution.
