About Breakthrough Silicon Valley

Breakthrough Silicon Valley launches talented but underserved middle school students on the path to college, while at the same time inspiring high school and college students to become educators. While ambitious in our goals, BTSV works: a stunning 99% of BTSV graduates are accepted into four-year colleges and 74% of BTSV Teaching Fellows are inspired to pursue a career in education as a result of their summer experience.

Breakthrough Silicon Valley’s tuition-free program provides year-round out of school time academic support, advising, and advocacy for a diverse group of talented students, most of whom come from under-resourced communities and are first in their family to go to college. Through our students-teaching-students model, BTSV also provides a consummate professional development experience in education by providing talented high school and college students the opportunity to design and teach classes under the direction of seasoned education professionals.

Located in San Jose, California, Breakthrough Silicon Valley is an affiliate of The Breakthrough Collaborative, a leading national service organization that acts as the national voice for 24 Breakthrough sites across the country.

The Position

The Breakthrough Leadership Program (BLP) was founded to prepare the next generation of leaders in education through a hands-on, impactful internship experience at a highly effective nonprofit organization. Throughout the internship, the BLP Interns will be coached and supervised by our experienced BTSV staff. Interns will develop project management skills, learn how to operate effective and efficient programming, and most importantly, develop relationships with students to foster and encourage educational growth.

Each day throughout the summer will look different: you might enter student data in Salesforce and create reports, publish newsletters and social media posts to show BTSV families our summer programs in action, or organize program-wide events such as BTSV’s highly-anticipated Olympics. You’ll also provide crucial program support by answering phone calls and communicating with students’ families, managing food distribution at student mealtimes, and monitoring students’ activities and safety.

We are hiring three BLP interns for summer 2022 — two to work with our middle school program, and one to work with our 9th grade program. The BLP Interns report to the BTSV’s Program Managers, who serve as Deans of Students at our summer program sites.

What background and skills do you have?:

  • Experience working with students, preferably middle school students, and an unwavering focus on students’ best interests
  • Ability to plan, organize, and implement projects with attention to detail
  • Flexible problem-solver with a can-do attitude; willing to support where needed
  • Communicative and able to responsibly pose questions and ask for clarification whenever necessary
  • Proficient with MS Office and Google Suite, including Excel/Sheets
  • Experience with social media platforms, especially TikTok and Instagram
  • Commitment to Breakthrough Silicon Valley’s mission and goals as well as a passion for educational equity

Bonus points if you’ve got:

  • Experience at a nonprofit youth development or educational organization, particularly one focused on college access for first-generation students and students of color
  • Bilingual (Spanish or Vietnamese)
  • Experience with Salesforce

We know that many strong candidates will not have all the skills we list. That’s OK. What else do you bring to the table? Please tell us!
