One Community seeks a bilingual colleague to create Spanish-language conversation groups for older adults as part of our program that addresses social isolation and loneliness in north Brooklyn. Temporary, possibly leading to permanent.
We are One Community:
One Community promotes equitable access to resources and opportunities in Fort Greene and Clinton Hill, Brooklyn. Covid showed us that older adults in our community need help to alleviate the harm caused by social isolation and loneliness. We created the Sharing Network in response.
The Program:
The Sharing Network is a way for seniors with limited capacity to have social contact to meet for fun and interesting conversation and activity groups by phone. Many participants are public housing residents who do not use the internet. We currently offer numerous groups in English each week, groups such as chair yoga, making art, Bible study, and Black history. Groups are kept small to foster interaction and social cohesion. As a result, once-isolated seniors have come together in a community they describe as their second family.
The Job:
Now One Community is ready to offer similar opportunities for social contact by phone to older Spanish-speaking adults in our neighborhood. We are looking for someone who can lead this project for a short term, preferably a student who is free for the summer and eager to do rewarding community work.
The Spanish-language Coordinator will help launch the Sharing Network’s Spanish-language groups, joining us to establish an organized and well-run program, to ensure that participants have a rewarding experience and communicate with community residents and institutions to reach interested seniors.
Responsibilities:
Working with the Sharing Network’s Program Director and Program Coordinator, volunteers and One Community staff to:
