Internship Overview:

Who we are looking for:

The Nonprofit Governance Intern will join the Office of the Chief Executive Officer department and provide support to the ASCO and CancerLinQ Board of Directors, Election and Special Awards Programs. The purpose of the internship is to provide the intern with an introduction to nonprofit board governance, nonprofit management, and opportunities to develop project management skills.

In collaboration with the Governance and Recognition Manager, the intern will provide logistics support for Board of Directors meetings, assist with activities related to the Nominating Committee, and create program timelines and materials, among other things. The Intern will attend weekly governance team meetings to discuss projects and will play an integral role in supporting ASCO’s prestigious meetings and programs.

Internship activities include:

Nonprofit Governance

  • Assist with preparing for meetings of the Board of Directors, Executive Committee, and other Governance Committees as needed
  • Attend meetings and provide support to Governance team members

ASCO Election

  • Provide support in all activities leading up to the summer Nominating Committee meetings to include assisting in the pre-screening of nominees to determine eligibility, preparing meeting materials, preparing the voting site, and coordinating travel logistics with committee members and post-meeting follow-ups

Special Awards Program

  • Assist with creating the 2023 program timeline
  • Coordinate with groups across ASCO to ensure deliverables and due dates adhere to organizational expectations
  • Assist with determining eligibility of special award nominees
  • Prepare materials for the review and selection of the 2023 ACO special award recipients

Required qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate BA/BS degree program or graduate program, or recently graduated from a 4-year degree program
  • Experience with or willing to learn Microsoft Office tools, SurveyMonkey, Smartsheet, Adobe Acrobat, and Zoom
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Professionalism
  • Strong customer service skills

Duration: 10 weeks during the summer – June 13, 2022, to August 19, 2022. This internship is 37.5 hours per week.  

Compensation: This summer internship position is paid. Additionally, ASCO will provide parking or a metro subsidy to the successful candidate. 

Location: This internship is based in Alexandria, VA and will require working onsite. Candidates should reside in the D.C. metro area or be able to relocate at their own expense. If you are not able to work at ASCO HQ, please do not apply.
