Volunteer Teacher Needed for Caye Caulker Ocean Academy

Ocean Academy is the very first high school on the small caribbean island of Caye Caulker. We opened our doors to 35 students in September 2008.

We are currently seeking volunteer teachers (minimum 2 months) for a variety of subject areas: computers, business studies, math, marine biology, spanish, social studies, aquatics, the arts (drama, dance, choir, art).

We are also keen to welcome a volunteer fundraiser/grant writer, and a school receptionist and organizer.

In addition to traditional high school subjects, Ocean Academy offers the following enrichment areas: aquatic career development (scuba, kayak, windsurfing, sailing), marine biology, class businesses, yoga, guitar.

Prior to Ocean Academy, the island youth had few options: most quit school after gr.7/8; some moved to the mainland to live with relatives; others travelled daily by water taxi to study in the dangerous capital city. Ocean Academy is truly a community school, and making a difference in the opportunities available for island youth.

Our small community school operates entirely on donations and grant applications. The land and building were donated, as were the textbooks, school supplies and uniforms. Our teacher salaries are also fundraised.
