About The Posse Foundation:

The Posse Foundation is a nationally recognized youth leadership development and college access program that identifies, recruits, and trains diverse teams—Posses—and sends them to top colleges and universities. To date, more than 9,966 Posse Scholars have been accepted into top-tier institutions of higher education throughout the country. These young people have received more than $1.5 billion in full-tuition leadership scholarships from Posse’s college and university partners and have been agents of positive change on their campuses.

The Posse Foundation launched the Veterans Program in 2012 in an effort to increase the rates at which veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces attend and graduate from selective colleges and universities. The Posse Veterans Program began in partnership with Vassar College and now also counts the University of Chicago, the University of Virginia, and Wesleyan University as partners. Each Posse veteran will attend college as part of a multicultural team—a Posse—of 10 veterans and will receive support prior to matriculating on campus and mentoring once enrolled.

Posse is currently looking for math coaches for Vassar Posse 8, Wesleyan Posse 7, UVA Posse 3, and UChicago Posse 2 for the Veterans Program Pre-Collegiate Training (PCT) program this summer. PCT begins on July 6th and ends on July 31st. This is a virtual/remote opportunity. Each Posse will meet with their math coach approximately 10-12 hours over the course of PCT. After interviewed, we will work with you to identify the best date/times for you to meet virtually with your Posse in July.

Math Coach Description:

The role of math coach is unique and special. Compared to other volunteer opportunities at Posse, the math coach enjoys the benefit of working very closely with Posse Scholars as a group. In turn, Posse Scholars greatly benefit from the expertise, energy, and commitment from their math coaches. The primary role of a math coach is to be the expert who teaches the core lessons of quantitative reasoning during group coaching sessions, providing feedback, and sharing strategies that will help Scholars with their quantitative reasoning skills. Feedback should give Scholars a sense of their math-related strengths and weaknesses and inspire them to want to be better at math.

Math coaches also work closely with Posse staff, particularly with trainers, to keep the math sessions dynamic, fun, and useful. To keep the sessions engaging, it is important that they understand the different and complementary aspects of teaching, coaching, and facilitating, and learn how each play a vital role in the implementation of the math program.

To be an effective math coach, it is important to understand the philosophy of the Pre-Collegiate Training program. The Pre-Collegiate training program embraces the belief that all students go through their own individual processes as they prepare to go to college. Posse’s training is meant to help veterans start thinking about aspects of their identity, academic goals, personal leadership, and other factors that shape their development into college students. Successful math coaches will have taught college level math (statistics, calculus, etc.) to learners with varying abilities and exposure to quantitative reasoning, and have experience working with and providing feedback to adult learners.

Detailed responsibilities include:

• Providing virtual math coaching and instruction for Posse Veterans Scholars during Pre-Collegiate Training

• Guide the Scholars through a provided curriculum which is designed to address the expectations of college-level quantitative reasoning coursework

• Attending a virtual training session in advance of Pre-Collegiate Training (June 2020, date and time TBD)

• Providing helpful strategies and thoughtful feedback to Scholars on their quantitative reasoning skills

• Helping Scholars identify their strengths and areas of improvement as they relate to quantitative reasoning

• Helping Scholars gain comfort with and confidence in their quantitative abilities

• Using math-related experiences, strengths, and resources to help prepare Scholars for their first year in college

• Collaborating and troubleshooting with trainers, the program director, the director, and/or the program coordinator during the duration of Pre-Collegiate Training (PCT)
