FOR-SITE Foundation invites you to join our team of Volunteer Art Guides for its next exhibition, LANDS END, taking place at the historic Cliff House in San Francisco from November 7, 2021 to March 27, 2022.  

We are looking for enthusiastic individuals who have a passion for art and the natural and cultural history of San Francisco, as well as a desire to share their knowledge with the public.

LANDS END Volunteer Art Guides will orient and interact with visitors, answer questions about and explain the artworks, and provide information about the artists and the conceptual themes at work in the exhibition, as well as their relevance to the site. Art Guides will also monitor assigned locations for security, traffic flow, and art maintenance.

We enforce COVID-19 sanitary rules: face mask and social distancing are mandatory.

In addition to training sessions, the expected time commitment is one day per week for the run of the exhibition. To register your interest in becoming an Art Guide, or if you have any questions, please email info@for-site.org with "Art guides" as a subject title.

Public transportation

FOR-SITE and the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy encourage visitors to use public transportation to access the exhibition. 

The number 38 bus line goes to the former Cliff House; the stop is 48th Street / Point Lobos. 

The Muni N line stop at Judah / La Playa / Ocean Beach is a roughly 30-minute walk along Ocean Beach from the former Cliff House.

Foot or Bike

Lands End trail access is located 1.1 miles north of the exhibition site. Bicycle parking is available at the Lands End Lookout Visitor Center parking lot. 

Car

Parking is available at the Lands End Lookout Visitor Center parking lot. Please do not leave any valuables inside your car.

LANDS END Art Guide volunteers will be responsible for providing all aspects of visitor service to exhibition visitors at the historic site of the Cliff House in San Francisco. Art Guides will orient and interact with visitors, answer questions about and explain the artworks, and provide information about the artists and the conceptual themes at work in the exhibition, as well as their relevance to the site. Art Guides will also monitor assigned locations for security, traffic flow, and art maintenance. 

 Appropriate clothing and comfortable, safe footwear is necessary for the working environment. This position requires standing and walking for extended periods, and adhering to COVID-19 health guidelines. Unique, specific attention will be required in each of the areas where the artworks are installed to monitor visitor flow and the safety and preservation of the artworks and the historic buildings. Your knowledge of the individual areas and installations, as well as the exhibition as a whole, will help facilitate optimum engagement. 

 Commitment Expected

One 6-hour shift per week on weekdays and/or weekends for the duration of the exhibition. Art Guides are also required to attend two half-day training sessions (possibly asynchronous, remote and/or onsite).

 Exhibition dates: November 7, 2021-March 27, 2022

Exhibition days/hours: Thursday-Sunday, 11:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. 

Key Duties and Responsibilities 

• Greet and engage visitors in the art featured in their assigned location, providing descriptors, background information on the artist(s), and identifying connections between the exhibition artworks and the sites’ histories

 • Possess a working knowledge of site history and National Park Service basics

 • Monitor artworks for safety, integrity and maintenance needs

 • Monitor and adjust visitor flow to assure the highest level of visitor comfort and safety

 • Monitor assigned location for security and resource protection

 • Voluntarily participate in the LANDS END social media program as able by sharing and liking posts 

• Assist in the maintenance and appearance of the exhibition areas

• Perform all opening, closing and reporting functions of the assigned locations

• Provide general visitor assistance, as requested

• Act as an ambassador for FOR-SITE Foundation, assisting all visitors with equal respect and enthusiasm

 • Dependability: completes tasks on time; takes responsibility for own actions; can be relied upon; is consistently on time

 • Demonstrated interest in art and history

Physical Requirements and Expectations

• Shifts are primarily performed standing or walking

 • Shifts may require squatting and kneeling

• Willingness to wear LANDS END volunteer attire

• Access to email and a computer for communication and to access online training materials

 COVID-19 Plans and Policies

Volunteers must comply with all COVID-19 policies to help maintain their and visitors’ health and safety. FOR-SITE will adhere to all CDC guidelines and will make changes to these policies before or during the run of the exhibition as needed. Any changes to these policies or additional protocols will be communicated to Volunteers in advance.


Volunteers must:

• Submit proof of full vaccination, having received their last vaccine dose at least 2 weeks prior to their first shift. Otherwise, they must a present a negative COVID-19 test taken 72 hours prior to each shift

• Wear a mask over their nose and mouth for the duration of their shift

• Maintain a 6 foot distance between themselves and visitors

• Communicate to FOR-SITE if they start experiencing any symptoms of COVID-19 and stay home until the symptoms subside and/or they receive a negative COVID-19 test 

• Remind visitors to keep their masks on at all times

Visitors must:

• Wear a mask for the duration of their visit 

• Maintain a 6 foot distance between them/their party and others inside the exhibition
