About 1 in 5 Houston adults is considered illiterate, experiencing difficulty in completing tasks such as filling out job applications. The goal of the Houston Adult Literacy Project is to build the capacity of adult education and literacy organizations in Houston, which support low-income, low literacy adult learners to help them to obtain and grow the skills they need to become self-sufficient and improve their quality of life. Act against adult illiteracy by serving with The Alliance Refugee Services as a Volunteer Coordinator VISTA. The Alliance is a leading nonprofit comprised of an amazing team that hails from 26 countries and speaks over 20 languages. The Alliance welcomes and empowers refugees, immigrants, and underserved residents who face financial, educational, health, language, or cultural barriers to realizing their dreams. The Alliance’s Refugee Services encompasses a variety of programs that provides a range of domestic services for newly arrived refugees to help them to adjust to their new lives in Houston.
