Feeling intimidated? Don’t! We frequently have potential classroom aides ask if we can use people who have never taught before, or people who don’t speak Spanish, and the answer is always, “Yes! Of course, we can!” What we need from our classroom aides is patience and a willingness to learn alongside your student. In addition, we do ask that our classroom aides fulfill these more specific requirements:
• Commit to tutor for a minimum of six months.
• Devote three or more hours per week to tutoring.
• Have a high-school diploma or its equivalent.
• Pass a criminal background check.
• Have current clearances.
• Pass a TB test.
• Read and sign IU5 policies.
• Be willing to participate in ongoing professional development.
Volunteer classroom aides work in coordination with our classroom instructors to provide one-on-one or small group assistance to give students the academic and workplace skills necessary to transition into employment, post-secondary education, or training.
