Hot Docs Volunteer Information:
Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival is a not-for-profit organization and North America’s largest documentary festival, conference, and market. In the office, in the theatres and at special events, Hot Docs counts on its volunteers to help the Festival run smoothly. We highly value the dedication and passion of our volunteers.
As a Volunteer for Hot Docs, you can:
• Gain valuable festival experience and knowledge
• Contribute to Toronto’s vibrant cultural community
• Join a growing network of filmmakers, students, film lovers, and engaged community leaders
• Access to Hot Docs, Doc Soup and the Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema screenings and events
As with any film festival, most of the necessary and important volunteer help takes place where the films themselves are playing – at our theatres! Theatre shifts are available daytime and evening during the week and on weekends. These shifts are most suitable for volunteers who are reliable, personable, work well on a team and don’t mind standing for periods of time.
THEATRE TEAM VOLUNTEERS: Working as a team of 4 to 22 volunteers alongside Captains, Ticket Scanners, and the Venue staff, the Theatre Team volunteers’ duties include maintaining line-ups of ticket holders or Rush patrons (often outdoors), giving out info/screening schedules, helping patrons find seats, directing traffic flow, assisting with crowd control, and helping to clean up between screenings.
TICKET SCANNERS: This smaller team of 2 to 9 volunteers is responsible for the smooth, efficient, and hasty entry of all patrons to a screening using scanning equipment to check each and every ticket. This position requires a steady hand, confidence, the ability to work well under pressure, and a relaxed disposition. This role has a 4-shift minimum in this position and an additional mandatory scanner training session.
FLOATER VOLUNTEERS: These are our ‘go anywhere’ volunteers! Floaters report to the Festival Volunteer Office at the beginning of a shift and are sent to venues that need a little extra help. TTC fare is provided to get to the venue, but you must make your own way home.
SOCIAL MEDIA VOLUNTEERS: Capturing the heart of Hot Docs, these volunteers document the unique relationship volunteers have to the Festival in photographs of festival volunteer work, recordings of volunteer experiences, and candid capture of the Festival atmosphere. If interested in this position, please email firstname.lastname@example.org directly.
PROMOTIONAL CODES: Volunteers earn Festival and Year-Round promotional codes in exchange for their hours. Promotional codes are transferable, so share them with friends and family!
Registration and Orientation are mandatory for all 2022 Festival Volunteers. Once you have registered at https://www.hotdocs.ca/volunteer you will be given the option to sign up for one Orientation session.
To keep the number of volunteers needed to a manageable level, we ask volunteers to complete a minimum of FOUR shifts during the festival which means dedicating an average of 20 hours of your time.
