HANA Center is looking for enthusiastic volunteers to work with our education department as tutors for students in ESL and citizenship. Volunteers will help our students pursue their learning goals through individual instruction, with additional guidance through our various teaching resources. Hours are flexible and decided between student and volunteer. At this moment, we encourage our volunteers to keep their tutoring sessions virtual.
HANA Center classes aim to reduce barriers for immigrants and low income families with limited English proficiency to achieve equal opportunity in life. Our citizenship classes provide immigrants not only with languages skills, but also practical information and the confidence they need to navigate U.S. society to improve the quality of their lives. Our students are all adult learners, and are predominately of Korean and Latinx heritage. Multilingual speakers are highly encouraged to apply, though in-language ability is not a requirement.
No previous teaching experience is required! Upon entering the program, volunteers will complete a remote, self-paced 12-hour tutor training with our partner Literacyworks. TEFL/TESOL-certified volunteers are exempt from this training.
NOTE: Volunteers must be able to provide an Illinois residential address.
