About us:

Lamwo Youth Forum for Change (LYFC) is a fully-registered community-based organization in Lamwo District of Northern Uganda led by the youth. The birth of this life-changing initiative dates back to 2016 with the vision of unlocking the potential of youth in the war-ravaged region and entire Northern Uganda to embrace gender equality, conserve the environment, innovate better ways of equitable access to education, provide better healthcare in the community, produce active and responsible citizens, and help young people boost their incomes through innovative enterprises.

Why the initiative:

Lamwo District ranks among the most poorest districts in Northern Uganda. The constituency that is home to some 400,000 (predominantly young people) are undergoing recovery from the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) tragedy that left many families missing or separated, lives lost, education stunted, incomes extensively reduced, poverty increased, healthcare systems disrupted, and the environment destroyed to an unthinkable level. Young people are bewildered, traumatized, without any hopes in the government or themselves and are in dire help of empowerment and reinforcement. The women and girls are at the top of these sufferings. With this large scale agony, what is better than a youth-driven association that restores hope, builds skills, and corrects the messes of war? We are working with the local government, civil society organizations, and the community at large to make a difference in the lives of the people in this part of the world and have since mobilized local and international volunteers to work with our youth and creatively generate solutions to these problems including cultural exchanges; hosting training seminars, organizing debates on post-conflict rehabilitation strategies, conducting business and entrepreneurship skills training, ICT education workshops for young leaders; tree planting and climate change awareness campaigns, and gender-related education to the youth.

Our biggest achievements:

We have trained over 500 young people who are mostly women and girls in business development, ICT, public health leadership and environmental management. Our Home-made jewellery project directly supports over 200 members of the youth community in the region to creatively make stunning crafts to boost their family incomes, while our English-speaking project has merged over 100 young learners to better English speakers from within and outside of the region to embark on language skills development. With the sports project that is working on planting basketball courts across the District and introducing more innovative and interesting games to young learners, we are set to reduce idleness and unnecessary illnesses substantially.

About the Volunteer role:

We are seeking to host volunteers both from within Uganda and overseas to live with families in Lamwo District to understand the history of the people, region, its challenges and potential solutions. Working with a local partner, you would be able to fully immerse yourself into our setting, but also have the opportunity to share with us unique cultural, professional and other aspects from your own part of the world. Over the period of between 1 and 6 months, the projects you would be working on include: games and sports; ICT Education, English language skills development, community health and women economic empowerment involving a range of activities from research to participation to training sessions.

The hope is that you would experience, first hand, the life of the people here but also generate accurate information for future research.

Education and Professional Requirements:

  1. A minimum of a high school diploma obtained from a reputable institution in any field, but higher degrees and other training would be great.
  2. Passion for bringing change to the impoverished communities of the world.
  3. Training in professional fields such as computer applications, games and sports, poverty alleviation, nature conservation, public health and women economic empowerment .
  4. Strong research ability in a developing country context
  5. High English language skills if English is not the language of instruction and work in your country
  6. A team player with the hunger for youth engagement
  7. Ability to appreciate and accept difference and live in poor communities for the entire period of stay.

What we offer:

  1. An opportunity to network with the local people and learn their languages, culture, and ways of life
  2. A chance to conduct research in any of the aforementioned fields with ease—free language translation services provided
  3. A certificate of appreciation for the altruism shown
  4. Free housing (with host families) for the entire period of stay
  5. Post-assignment research support and any other guidances

What you need to bring:

  1. Enough money to support your stay: plane tickets, local transportation, health insurance and other personal needs
  2. Energy and diversity from wherever you are from and your life, professional, and academic stories to inspire the youth
