AmeriCorps VISTA Leader: 2021-2022 NeighborWorks America

Peer support and program innovation come together in this unique leadership opportunity! Support and engage over 40 VISTA members serving at community development organizations across the country!

Organization/Program Description: NeighborWorks America partners with the Corporation for National and Community Service to sponsor one of the largest AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) programs in the country. Our program fights poverty by building strong and empowered communities. AmeriCorps VISTA provides full-time service members to nonprofit, faith-based, and other community organizations to build that organization’s capacity and create or expand programs that bring low-income individuals and communities out of poverty.

The NeighborWorks VISTA Program is committed to advancing Racial Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (REDI) throughout our program policies and practices in alignment with the REDI efforts of NeighborWorks America. We are seeking a leader who has a strong commitment to the values and principles of REDI and can help guide our work in this area and generate new strategies and solutions that will promote REDI outcomes throughout our program and across the NeighborWorks VISTA network. The NeighborWorks America network has been awarded the opportunity to place 40 VISTA members at NeighborWorks organizations across the United States, as well as a VISTA Leader.

VISTA Leaders are VISTA members who have already successfully completed at least one full term with AmeriCorps VISTA, State and National, NCCC, or Peace Corps and are looking to serve another year of service in a greater leadership capacity. The VISTA Leader will support the NeighborWorks VISTA members in the field through programmatic responsibilities and peer mentorship. The NeighborWorks VISTA Program’s primary areas of focus include: Financial Literacy, Housing, and Employment/Workforce Development. The VISTA Leader will provide support and technical assistance to VISTA members in the field to ensure that the objectives of the subsites and the national program are met or exceeded. The VISTA Leader works closely with the Project Director who will provide ongoing guidance and development on the VISTA Leader’s professional skills and on day-to-day operations. The VISTA Leader may have opportunities to travel for site visits, trainings, and attending other meetings.

NeighborWorks America is committed to recruiting highly qualified individuals who can help build organizational capacity by embedding equity and inclusion values into program policies and practices that can better meet the needs of the diverse communities we serve.

Member Duties: Support VISTA members serving with the NeighborWorks America network in having a successful service year. Provide resources and technical assistance, coordinate professional development opportunities, and offer peer mentorship to VISTA members located at subsites across the country. Welcome VISTA members at the start of their service and provide them with critical tools, resources, and support. Throughout the service year engage with NeighborWorks America staff, subsite supervisors and VISTA members to deliver ongoing technical support and training opportunities. Organize and facilitate webinar presentations and Subject Matter Expert webinars, coordinate in-person and virtual networking activities, and deliver resources and support to VISTA members and subsites as necessary. Understand and communicate the rules and regulations of VISTA to members and subsites and coach VISTA members, as needed providing professional and personal support through check-in calls and responding to VISTA member concerns.

The VISTA Leader will also support general NeighborWorks VISTA Program administration and provide recommendations on best practices and improving the VISTA member experience. Conduct subsite visits and provide technical assistance, collect progress reports, compile data, and synthesize report information to ensure adherence to program guidelines and measure the program’s impact. Support program improvements that will help integrate REDI (Race Equity, Diversity and Inclusion) principles into program policies and practices. Roll out and create new ways to engage VISTA members, boost morale and celebrate VISTA successes.

Program Benefits: Training, Choice of Education Award or End of Service Stipend, Relocation Allowance, Childcare assistance if eligible, Living Allowance, Health Coverage*, $350 Monthly Stipend Towards Housing/Transit
