Volunteer, Apex for Youth Saturday Elementary Programs

ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION

The mission of Apex for Youth is to deliver possibilities to underserved Asian and immigrant youth from low-­income families in NYC. Apex serves students from pre-K to 12th grade in New York City through educational, after-school, athletic, and middle school/high school mentoring programs.

We provide youth with opportunities to develop strong relationships with adults who volunteer as consistent and caring mentors, tutors, and coaches. Ultimately, Apex for Youth aims to nurture youth who will be confident, college and career-ready individuals who are actively engaged in their community.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY

Apex’s Elementary Programs addresses the educational, physical, and social-emotional needs of elementary students through athletics, small group tutoring, enrichment, and emotional support programs run by caring adult volunteers. Elementary sessions take place on Saturday Mornings from October - May.

Apex for Youth is looking for passionate volunteers to work with elementary school students on Saturday mornings either virtually OR in person in Sunset Park, Brooklyn or Manhattan Chinatown. Volunteers will be responsible for engaging students in read alouds, discussions, and hands-on projects centered around themes of community engagement, social justice, advocacy, and social emotional well-being.

VOLUNTEER RESPONSIBILITIES

• Provide academic and social emotional support through a set curriculum to students in Grades 3 to 5.
• Collaborate with co-volunteers to lead and facilitate the day’s session activities in a classroom or virtual classroom setting.
• Encourage students to try different approaches in solving problems and completing projects.
• Help students discover and develop their strengths.
• Enhance students’ beliefs in their own potential and capacity for growth.

VOLUNTEER QUALIFICATIONS

• Commit to at least one semester (5-6 sessions) on scheduled Saturday mornings (tentatively 9:45am-12:15pm).
• Open-minded and willing to learn.

HOW TO APPLY

1. Complete an online volunteer application at www.apexforyouth.org/volunteer.
2. Once we receive your application, Apex for Youth staff will schedule an interview with you.
3. Complete background check.

VOLUNTEER TIME COMMITMENT

Commit to at least one semester (Fall: October - December; Spring: February - May). Semesters typically consist of 8-10 Saturday morning sessions, not including holidays.
