The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network's (PanCAN) vision is to create a world in which all patients with pancreatic cancer will thrive. Our mission is to take bold action to improve the lives of everyone impacted by pancreatic cancer by advancing scientific research, building community, sharing knowledge, and advocating for patients. PanCAN was the first organization dedicated to fighting pancreatic cancer in a comprehensive way, and for more than two decades, we’ve grown a nationwide movement tackling the disease from all angles.
As the Survivor/Caregiver Engagement Co-Chair for the National Capital Regional Affiliate (DC metro area), you are the driving force to engage with survivors and caregivers. As the Co-Chair, it is your role to recognize, appreciate, empower, and connect them at the local level. We encourage you to be creative in your outreach and develop an approach that works for your community. Annually, you are responsible for recognizing and celebrating survivors and caregivers at one Affiliate event, including but not limited to PurpleStride or PurpleLight. In addition, you should be implementing at least one connecting opportunity outside of PurpleStride or PurpleLight, to bring the community of survivors and caregivers together. Finally, ensuring all survivors and caregivers are aware of Patient Services and the critical support and services provided and connecting them, is an essential part of your role.
Survivors and caregivers join our community at various stages in their journey with pancreatic cancer. To effectively engage newcomers, it is important that you welcome them and meet them where they are at. Often through active listening, people self-identify what works best for them and what they want their relationship to be with PanCAN and your local community. For example, a caregiver may only be interested in hearing about the resources PanCAN provides. A newly diagnosed patient may simply want to meet others with shared experiences. A long-term survivor or caregiver may be ready to get more involved in the local Affiliate. You might be their entry point to our community and a positive first experience is important for an impactful relationship.
We ask for a two-year committment.
