In the northwestern kenya among the pastoral Turkana community, girls undergo a tough time during their menses often forced to bleed their periods in dry river beds shallow hollows scooped in the sand where they sit or squat the entire day, returning back to their mantattas (homes) at dusk. This with temperatures over 30 degrees celicius is not the only thing they brave but also a possibility of sexual harassmanet from herders. Some are forced to use dry carmel or donkey dung which they stuff between their upper thighs to soak up the bleeding. This exposes these girls and women to urinary tract infections. FPFK runs various programmes among these marginalised populations and one of such programmes is the mesntrual health advocasy programme. We believe that raising awareness about this situation, supporting co creation of solutions with the community and supporting skills training and entrepreneurship can helpo these girls and women participate efficiently in the betterment of their lives.
We would appreciate volunteers willing to reach out to these native lovely people and help promote healthy menstrual health through making of reusable sanitary pads and participate in advocay drives for a better menstrual health. This is an around the year opportunity and yiu are welcome for enquiries. It involves spending time with both girls and men to eradicate menstrual shaming, times with girls in schools and churches as well as at water points.
