Research coach for Washington Heights, NYC public school literacy program (KB-B)

Volunteer with Behind the Book, a non-profit literacy organization that inspires New York City public school students to love reading. Through our rich, innovative programs, which are part of the class curricula, accomplished authors visit high-needs Pre-K-12th-grade classrooms to guide students in creating their own writing projects based on the theme of the author's book.No experience is necessary. We provide advance information on your role, and hold a brief orientation right before a workshop begins. As a coach, you'll support and encourage students as they work on their projects. Groups welcome.

This research workshop needs your help at a school in Washington Heights, NYC. To sign up, contact volunteer@behindthebook.org with program code 45KB-B. We'll supply more information when you're confirmed.

Date/Time: Tuesday, March 3rd / 12:30 - 2:30 PM (15-minute orientation begins at 12:30 PM)

About the workshop: Fifth-graders read Birth of the Cool: How Jazz Great Miles Davis Found His Sound, Kathleen Cornell Berman’s free verse biography documenting Davis’ journey from childhood to the Newport Jazz Festival. Students will learn about the genre, and how other musicians inspired Davis. Working with coaches, they’ll find facts about jazz’s origins, evolution, and contribution to our culture. *You can also sign up to be a writing coach for this program on Thursday, March 19th from 12:30 - 2:30 PM to help students develop their own free verse about what inspires them to reach a goal.
