Nosso Programa

We prepare candidates to work specifically with diverse populations and to conduct research that prepares them for advocacy work and doctoral studies.

Master of Arts in Teaching/Master of Arts in Early Childhood Education

The Graduate Program in Education embodies UDC’s longstanding commitment to preparing future educators to provide an exceptional education to the residents of the District of Columbia. The program has an intensive focus on practical classroom training and is closely aligned with trends and curricula at local schools. Students will learn how to teach from experienced educators with a deep understanding of local context and practical concerns, not scholars who are far removed from practice. Our fulltime faculty have years of classroom experience and continue to work closely with area schools. In addition, many of our adjunct faculty members are active principals in D.C. public schools who have their fingers on the pulse of current issues and trends. In addition, UDC works closely with D.C. public schools to pair candidates with outstanding professional mentors and opportunities for hands-on learning.

The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree prepares students to become socially conscious classroom practitioners. The program embraces the demands, challenges, and opportunities that teachers encounter in high-poverty, high-need schools. While completing professional requirements, students will learn firsthand how be a positive force for change in urban schools and communities, with a focus on the District of Columbia. To that end, the curriculum highlights three key areas of need:

  • Honoring and integrating students’ home languages and cultures into the classroom
  • Early childhood education and school readiness
  • Instructional support and interventions for children with special needs

Master of Science in Counseling: School Counseling

The counseling program offers the Master of Science Degree in Counseling with a concentration in School Counseling that is accredited by The Council for Accreditation of Counseling & Related Educational Programs (CACREP). The mission of the graduate program in school counseling is to provide a graduate education that will prepare students to meet the needs of a culturally diverse school community and increase the number of well-trained, competent counseling professionals that are able to serve students in grades k-12. At UDC, a shared multicultural perspective among students and faculty shapes the learning environment. Students are acutely aware of the diverse needs of students in k-12. To that end, they are committed to using the ASCA National Model to support student’s academic, career, and social/emotional development. Students and faculty also embrace the approach of healing the whole person, the family, and the community at large. The Counseling Unit, which embraces the core values of the institution, will fulfill its mission by providing students with an education that integrates theory and practice, by maintaining excellence in teaching, supporting faculty development, and ensuring that the curriculum reflects the changing needs of a highly technological and multiethnic society.
