The Presidents’ Alliance on Higher Education and Immigration (Presidents’ Alliance) seeks an energetic, collaborative, and thoughtful Fellow, part-time (August 2024 to June 2025) (15 to 20 hours per week ) dedicated to increasing educational access and equity for undocumented, refugee/displaced, and international students and collaborating with institutions and partner organizations. 

The ideal candidate is a graduate student with experience or interest in working on issues at the intersection of higher education and immigration. Students completing a Bachelor's degree and recent alum will also be considered. 

 

Position Responsibilities 

  • Assist the Director of the Higher Ed Immigration Portal to coordinate a high school college counselor strategy group. The goal of this group will be to create a robust college counseling guide on how to support, advise, and build community with undocumented high school students.
  • Update and help organize the high school college counselor directory and listserv; engage and answer email inquiries from college counselors. The goal is to eventually build enough K12 presence on the portal.
  • Help to finalize the guide, publish it on the portal, and host a webinar with the counselors involved to discuss the importance of undocu-competent counselors for undocumented students.
  • Support the Higher Ed Portal; Director with the rollout of a new portal newsletter. The goal of this newsletter is to provide partners, campus practitioners, and members with more specific and detailed resources available on the portal.
  • Support the private institutions tool. 
  • Co-develop tools and resources that can be shared with staff, students, departments and institutions in order to increase the capacity of institutions to admit, fund, and support undocumented graduate and professional students, including policy guides, templates, FAQs, funding opportunities, webinars, etc;
  • Provide support for the Higher Ed Immigration Portal, by uploading effective practices and other materials.
  • Help coordinate student narratives to be shared on the Higher Ed Immigration Portal by identifying, supporting drafts, and uploading those narratives
  • Assist with day-to-day operations of the Higher Ed Immigration Portal, such as providing logistical support for events and webinars, assist with scheduling, create surveys and collect responses, etc.

 

Qualifications & Requirements 

  • Our ideal candidate is a current student pursuing an advanced degree in social sciences, student affairs, education, or communications. A Bachelor’s degree is preferred, but students completing a Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree will also be considered. 
  • Ability to work between 15 to 20 hours per week and have a set schedule during the work week. 
  • Strong writing, verbal, and presentation skills. Experience or willingness to help coordinate meetings, write reports, plan webinars, and/or update website content.
  • Ability to work independently, solve problems creatively, and collaborate effectively with colleagues, member institutions, partners, and Presidents’ Alliance team members.
  • Time management and project management skills with the ability to prioritize work, deliver high-quality, accurate work, and meet multiple deadlines.
  • Ability to conduct basic data analysis, visualization, and database management.  Experience with Excel, Powerpoint, Microsoft/Google Office products, Asana, Constant Contact, Zoom, and WordPress systems welcomed.
  • Willingness to learn and grow professionally. 

 

Position Location & Structure 

This part-time fellowship is a virtual independent contractor position, with preference for those in the Los Angeles and Ventura County areas. Independent contractors are not required to show I9 documentation, are not benefited employees, and are paid as vendors.  Fellowship stipends are reported on the year-end tax Form 1099. Applicants must provide an iTIN or Social Security number for tax reporting. The rate for the position is $20-22 per hour and it will run from August 2024 to June 2025.
