The Division of Law is looking for experienced attorneys with supervisory experience to oversee sections within the Administrative Practice Group in Trenton and Newark. This is a management attorney position that will oversee all aspects of litigation and counseling functions within the assigned sections. The ideal candidates will have significant experience in administrative law and litigation. They will also possess strong leadership and organizational skills, excellent written and oral communication abilities, and a track record of successful case management and client representation. The position will be appointed as an Assistant Attorney General with a salary of $178,250.00 per year.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:

The Attorney General has broad oversight of the state’s legal and law enforcement matters. As the head of the Department of Law & Public Safety, the Attorney General supervises a wide range of Divisions, Offices, and Commissions, consisting of over 2,800 sworn law enforcement officers, 600 attorneys, and thousands of other public servants.

ABOUT THE DIVISION:

The Division of Law (DOL) serves as primary legal counsel for New Jersey state government. Generally speaking, this work takes three forms: by providing legal advice to the state’s departments and agencies, by defending the state in civil litigation, and by bringing civil lawsuits against individuals, corporations, and other entities that violate the law and harm New Jersey and its residents. Staffed by nearly 500 attorneys, DOL’s responsibilities cover a broad swath of legal issues, including those involving banking, child protection, corrections, education, environmental, finance, health, insurance, taxation, and transportation matters.

ABOUT THE PRACTICE GROUP:

The Administrative Practice Group, includes six sections which account for the representation of a substantial number of New Jersey’s Departments, agencies and entities. The sections are: Community Affairs, State & Elections, Consumer Affairs Counseling, Education and Higher Education, Employment Counseling and Labor, Health and Human Services, and Law & Public Safety. As a result, the Administrative Practice Group is involved in a robust administrative hearing practice as each Department it represents has various licensure, enforcement and penalty responsibilities that are exercised through administrative hearings. In addition, the Practice Group handles federal and State litigation as well as New Jersey Appellate Division and Supreme Court matters. The Practice Group also provides counseling to Boards and Commissions within its represented Departments, agencies and entities, and provides legal advice to our Department and agency heads.

ABOUT THE POSITION:

Under the supervision of the Deputy Director of the Administrative Practice Group (APG), Assistant Attorney General in charge of the APG and/or the Director or Deputy Director of the Division of Law, will be responsible for:

  • oversight and management of assigned Sections of the APG;
  • supervising the counseling and representation of client agencies of assigned Sections of the APG;
  • oversee all aspects of litigation within assigned Sections, including screening of matters, discovery, motion practice, trial work and appellate briefings;
  • oversee the handing of transactional matters and provision of legal advice;
  • participating in evaluations of Section Chiefs and Assistant Section Chiefs; and,
  • other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduation from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctor.
  • Admission to practice as an Attorney-at-Law in the State of New Jersey is required.
  • Four (4) years of professional legal experience as an attorney at law of the State of New Jersey in the area of the specialty
  • or, three (3) years of professional legal experience as an attorney for State or Federal administrative agencies, which shall have involved a significant amount of the specialized legal work,
  • or, two (2) years of unique specialized legal experience.

OTHER KEY FACTORS:

  • Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey.
  • Candidates should submit a supplemental document, included with your resume, outlining (a) litigation experience in State and Federal courts; and (b) supervisory experience over other attorneys.
