Make the Road States (MRstates) is the national home for the second-generation Make the Road family of organizations in Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Nevada, in addition to New York, that serves to uplift the voices of working-class, immigrants, women, LGBTQIA people, and people of color across the Make the Roads umbrella. .

Make the Road New York (MRNY) builds the power of immigrant and working-class communities to achieve dignity and justice through organizing, policy innovation, transformative education, and survival services. Make the Road New York operates community centers in Bushwick, Brooklyn; Jackson Heights, Queens; Port Richmond, Staten Island; Brentwood, Long Island and White Plains, Westchester County. With a membership of 27,000, MRNY tackles the critical issues facing our communities, including workplace justice, tenants’ rights, immigrant rights and civil rights, TGNCIQ justice, public education, health care access, and immigration reform. (TGNCIQ = transgender, gender non-conforming, intersex and queer).  MRNY is a newly unionized workplace, currently negotiating its first Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Our Human Resources Department  is a fast paced department responsible for managing a full umbrella of Human Resources services to the more than 350+ employees that are designated across 6 offices in NYC and in 4 other states within the USA.  Our commitment is to make employees feel that they are one of our main priorities, excellence customer service is essential. 

Current Opening:

Make the Road States is looking for an experienced, highly motivated process driven and proactive HR professional who have demonstrated experience driving implementation and execution of key HR responsibilities in a fast paced environment serving an umbrella of organizations.  The selected candidate will join an expanding human resources team working with union and non-union employees.  The incumbent will handle employee and labor relations issues, policies and procedures, performance management, employee engagement, collective bargaining, and other ad hoc duties.  This position will also play an important role partnering with the Director of People and Culture (DoPC) in creating an equitable, fair work environment for everyone as a key strategy for engagement and growth.

Rey Responsibilities but not limited to:

LABOR AND EMPLOYMENT RELATIONS: 

  • Liaison between the Union and the Human Resources Department
  • Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: 

LABOR AND EMPLOYMENT RELATIONS: 

  • Liaison between the Union and the Human Resources Department
  • Assist in the administration of collective bargaining agreement.
  • In collaboration with the Director of People and Culture, manage workplace issues to include disciplinary actions in compliance with applicable federal, state and local employment related regulations
  • Responsible for coaching supervisors needing guidance on employees who are on probation
  • Assist in supervisor meetings with coaching material and needs based on evaluations/ experience

LABOR LAWS COMPLIANCE: 

  • Responsible for monitoring labor laws changes and sharing changes with the team
  • Responsible for conducting FLSA testing to determine employees classification
  • Recommend policies, procedures, protocols changes based on labor laws changes; once approved monitor that those changes are made in the different documents managed by the department and ensure its distribution
  • In collaboration with the Director of People and Culture conducts in-house investigation and trainings, including but not limited to Title VII complaints, supervision and sexual harassment

MANAGE PERFORMANCE EVALUACION MODULE ON HRIS: 

  • Team up with the Director of People and Culture, Department Directors  and State Directors to design/modify the platform to better reflect the needs of the organization in staff evaluation
  • Monitor how the module is being utilized across the organization, run the necessary analysis reports and establish the training strategy to guarantee its proper utilization.

MISC: 

  • Supervises the Human Resources Manager
  • Collaborates with Director of People and Culture in preparation for annual salary increases
  • Collaborate with Legal Department leadership team in preparation for legal salary scale updates
  • Job Description updates and assist Department Directors with its design
  • Responsible for special projects as needed

Requirements:

  • Eligible to work in the U.S
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Required to be fully vaccinated with a FDA approved COVID-19 vaccine
  • Bilingual – Spanish, preferred
  • 3 to 5 years of experience within a union employee population
  • A minimum of 8 years of progressively responsible experience in an HR department, with at least 3 years in a supervisory capacity
  • 3 to 5 years of experience implementing and/or managing performance evaluation platform/module in a HRIS
  • Experience in a Non-Profit organization, preferred
  • Proven experience in project management, preferably within Human Resources
  • Knowledge on labor laws related to FMLA, NYPFL; ADA; ACA; DOME; COBRA is a plus
  • Demonstrated commitment to a service oriented approach.

  • Competence in handling stressful situations in a timely manner
  • Able to juggle different high level priorities 
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Strong analytical skills with experience analyzing data that drive decision-making.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to independently establish plans and successfully execute multiple assignments with conflicting priorities and concurrent deadlines in a dynamic environment.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively and collaboratively with diverse internal and external stakeholders.

Salary and Benefits:

MRStates offers an excellent benefit package including health insurance, 401K, and generous paid vacation, sick, personal days. The salary range for this position is from $90,259 to $102,643.
