Position Description

Pioneer Works seeks a motivated accounting professional to manage the financial operations of our organization, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and transparency in financial matters. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in nonprofit accounting and financial management. An interest in supporting the arts and fostering cultural engagement is a plus. The Controller / Senior Accountant will be responsible for managing our recently re-engineered accounting systems, which make use of QBO Advance, Synder, BILL & DIVVY, and JustWorks – familiarity with these systems is preferred.

The Controller / Accountant will have an exciting opportunity to join a growing management team at a critical juncture in our organization’s evolution.

Responsibilities

  • Manage all aspects of financial reporting.
  • Oversee day-to-day accounting activities, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger management.
  • In partnership with the CEO and CFO, collaborate with department heads to develop annual budgets. Monitor budget performance, analyze variances, and provide strategic recommendations to optimize resource allocation.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP standards. Work with senior staff to provide insights into financial performance and trends.
  • In partnership with the CFO, coordinate annual audits and tax filings with external auditors and regulatory agencies. Ensure compliance with IRS regulations, nonprofit accounting standards, and grant requirements.
  • Manage financial aspects of grants, including budget development, expense tracking, and reporting. Work closely with program managers to ensure grant funds are utilized efficiently and in accordance with donor restrictions.
  • Monitor cash flow and implement strategies to optimize cash reserves and mitigate financial risks.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in finance or accounting. CPA or advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in financial management, preferably in the nonprofit sector.
  • Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles, regulations, and compliance requirements.
  • Experience coordinating audit activities and managing reporting, budget development and analysis, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, payroll, and accounting for investments.
  • A track record in grants management as it relates to compliance and reporting of government, corporate and foundation grants is essential.
  • Technologically savvy, with advanced knowledge of accounting and reporting software.
  • Strong communication skills; experience effectively communicating key data.
  • Ability and desire to translate complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels including finance and non-finance personnel.

In alignment with Pioneer Works' current hybrid work policy, all applicants must be available to report to our Brooklyn-based office at least three days per week.


Compensation

Compensation commensurate with experience. Range: $125-150K/year + full benefits including health insurance, 401k, and unlimited PTO.
