Legal Clinic for the Disabled (LCD), a mid-sized legal services agency, is a nationally-recognized leader in the medical-legal partnership movement, an approach that provides immediate access to a legal advocate within preventative medical settings to identify and address unmet legal needs before they reach a crisis point, yielding better client health outcomes. For over 35 years, LCD has worked to empower low-income people with disabilities and chronic health conditions and people who are deaf and hard of hearing by providing free legal representation to overcome obstacles that would otherwise affect clients’ independence, health, and quality of life. LCD is headquartered in Center City. We work directly with medical partners at nine hospitals and health centers across Philadelphia and we actively participate in the Philadelphia Eviction Prevention Project in partnership with five other legal service agencies. Last year alone, LCD served over 1,900 clients and more than 2,000 additional household members, furthering our mission to foster inclusion, independence, and justice for all.

Position Purpose:

Build a major gift fundraising program, expand our donor base, and diversify our funding sources. Our new strategic plan hinges on strong guidance and influence of this development leader to help us realize our full organizational potential.

Reporting:

The Director of Development is a member of the leadership team, reporting to the Executive Director and actively working with members of the Board of Directors.

Administrative support is shared.

Position Overview:

The Director of Development, working in conjunction with the Executive Director and Board of Directors, leads all LCD fundraising activity, including donor relationship building, major gift solicitation, planned giving, annual giving, grant development, and special events. They will productively engage with individuals at all levels of seniority both within and outside of the organization, including the LCD Board of Directors.

Detailed Responsibilities:

Donor Engagement 

• Identify and cultivate relationships with individual, corporate, and foundation donors, in collaboration with the Executive Director and Board of Directors
• Solicit and steward major gifts
• Develop organization-wide revenue generation strategies, participate in budgetary goal setting, and regularly share data on trends and performance to inform and engage leadership
• Manage annual fundraising to establish a dedicated cadre of regular donors
• Build infrastructure to successfully promote deferred giving opportunities

Donor Communication

• Plan strategic communication to promote LCD to current and potential donors
• Develop and maintain compelling and accurate content conveying the impact of LCD programs and advocacy work for the LCD website and other platforms
• Prepare donor-centered content for the annual report

Board Engagement

• In conjunction with the Executive Director, develop and implement strategies to increase Board engagement in fundraising
• Serve as primary liaison to the Fundraising Committee of the Board

Grant Writing and Reporting

• Identify and evaluate grant opportunities and develop and submit proposals in concert with the program team
• Manage grant reporting and compliance

Special Events

• Strategize, coordinate, and manage the LCD annual fundraising event

Financial Reporting

• Provide regular updates on visits, solicitations, and revenue generation to the Executive Director
• Create and track fundraising forecasts to inform operations and budgeting
• Manage fundraising and donation processing platforms
• Oversee donor database, tracking systems, and online communications platforms
• Oversee the gift acknowledgment process

Requirements:

• At least 10 years of fundraising experience with an emphasis on individual giving
• Experience building donor relationships and soliciting donations
