Reports To: Director of Women’s and Constituency Programs

Position Location: Remote

Position Type: Part-time), non-exempt, union. This 60% schedule equates to 24 hours of work time (including 3 hours of paid lunch/break time) each week.

Duration: This position is seasonal and runs from May through December.

Compensation: $50/hour

Position Description:

The Political Coordinator works on behalf of NALAF to develop a roster of endorsees, ensuring New American candidates are winning races up and down the ballot across the country. Applicants should have experience working with immigrant communities, uplifting communities of color, and managing a program at a mission-driven organization.


Responsibilities:

Candidate Support (60%)

  • Collaborate with state-based staff to identify, recruit and track community leaders ready to run for public office; assist with training as needed
  • Support office hours, and continuing skills education for NALAF endorsees and alumni of NAL’s candidate trainings. 
  • Manage the endorsement program, including managing logistics and data for the candidate questionnaire and interview process, as well as drafting endorsement recommendations for Board
  • Manage with technical support post-endorsement, which includes following up on endorsement expectations and communicating with campaigns where appropriate
  • Track alumni, candidates, and elected officials running for office in the NAL network to ensure accurate data. Conduct post mortem interviews with endorsees after their elections to measure success of endorsement program, gain some lessons learned and improve political landscape guides

Policy and Governance (25%)

  • Manage research and electoral opportunities for New Americans in coordination with the Director of Women’s and Constituency Programs
  • Represent NAL and NALAF with ally organizations and national coalitions, strengthening and building relationships to advance political programming
  • Ensure a smooth process that transitions winning candidates into our Elected Officials Network and losing candidates into programs that provide additional support and training

Operations and Development (15%)

  • Support the Development team in additional fundraising efforts as appropriate
  • Work with the Department of Program Evaluation and Operations to create reports on measuring success of endorsement program and political activity

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Commitment to serving immigrant communities and building an inclusive democracy; possess cultural awareness and sensitivity to the needs of undocumented and under-documented communities
  • Passion for the vision and mission of NAL/AF and the ability to communicate this passion to others
  • Minimum 2-3 years of campaign and/or political organizing experience working with campaigns, in politics, or at an organization that makes endorsements
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, both written and oral
  • Working knowledge of the political landscape and general campaign finance laws
  • Expert interpersonal skills in dealing with potential candidates, potential donors, lawmakers, and colleagues
  • Ability to set and complete ambitious goals
  • Attention to detail and follow through on all elements of work
  • Ability to adapt to quickly changing deadlines and priorities
  • Integrity, positive attitude, mission-oriented, and self-directed with a demonstrated passion for our mission
  • A team player who can interrelate and operate effectively with peers and other associates within a collegial yet fast-paced work environment
  • Work with a "no task too big, no task too small” attitude
  • Proficiency of Excel/Google Suite, VAN, GetThru/ThruText, Airtable and EveryAction
  • Willingness and availability to travel and work on weekends for occasional trainings and convenings
