Next Step Domestic Violence
Project is looking to hire a paralegal to work with a legal team providing
holistic legal services for victims of domestic and dating violence, stalking
and harassment. This person will provide court advocacy to survivors of
domestic violence and related matters in Hancock and Washington Counties.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to: legal assistance under the
guidance of an attorney on Protection from Abuse Orders, divorce, parental
rights and responsibilities actions and other matters related to maintaining
personal safety and economic sustainability. The Paralegal will be supervised
by Next Step’s Managing Attorney and work with a full legal team. Consulting
with the legal team to determine appropriate services is an ongoing part of the
job, as is the regular compilation of data, organized filing, and preparation
of documents for court. This position will require travel to Machias and Calais
as necessary.
The Paralegal must complete Next Step’s
44-hour Core Advocacy Training and participate in on- going trainings. A
Paralegal degree or certification is preferred but we can be flexible if the
person has equivalent skills such as general office management/administration, creative
problem-solving skills, effective communication, client relations experience,
capacity to manage caseloads effectively and/or strong understanding of the
legal system. Any person working, volunteering, or interning for Next Step to
provide legal assistance funded by an OVW Program must demonstrate expertise in
working with diverse populations. All individuals who provide these services
have will be required to complete training specific to legal services,
in addition to Next Step’s Core Advocacy Training.
Cultural competency and proficiency in Spanish and/or Haitian Creole is a plus.

Next Step offers full benefits including dental and life
insurance policy. Starting pay is $48,000. Paid vacation and sick time begin to
accumulate upon start date.
