How You’ll Contribute

The Director of Financial Planning and Analysis (FP&A) acts as the lead business partner for assigned Divisions within National Geographic Society. Reporting directly to the Vice President of FP&A and partnering with stakeholders across the organization, this role will be responsible for the financial operations of specific business units, including financial planning, proactive business analytics, financial modeling, and reporting. The Director of FP&A will support improvements in decision-making processes, provide guidance to senior management and budget owners, support enhancements to financial systems and data structure, assist with business optimization, and mentor team members.Your Impact

Responsibilities 

  • Budget and Forecast: Work closely with division budget owners and teams to build and manage annual and long-term budget plans and monthly forecasts. Communicate deadlines and budgeting procedures.  Provide guidance and develop training for business units as needed. (30%) 
  • Reporting: Manage and prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual divisional financial reporting to various budget owners and coordinate with other team members to report divisional progress to CFOO. Work with Senior Director of FP&A on all philanthropic and other revenue reporting as needed. (15%)
  • Month-End Process: Collaborate with Corporate Accounting on the month end close process. Prepare and verify that all monthly entries for assigned divisional areas are recorded accurately and timely. Regularly interact with other finance areas as needed to answer questions or help to resolve issues with business unit partners. (15%)
  • Financial Analysis and Modeling: Collaborate with budget owners, members of FP&A team, and Corporate Accounting to perform ad-hoc analysis and to explain variances versus budget and forecasts. Develop financial models using data insights generated from relevant and timely analysis of financial information. (20%)
  • Systems: Work with peers in Technology for financial data structure updates, establish reporting requirements, and administration of the Adaptive planning system. Seek opportunities to improve the accuracy and automation of current processes. (20%)

What You’ll Bring

Education Background

Bachelor’s in Finance, Accounting, Economics or Business degree; Advanced Business degree a plus.

Minimum Years and Type of Experience

10+ years of finance experience that includes interfacing with organizational leadership and working with many functions within an organization.  Must have at least 3+ years management experience.  Must have an understanding of financial modeling and the ability to translate complex financial data into actionable insights.  Must have demonstrated ability to lead, organize, and manage staff and projects. Familiarity with systems implementation and financial data structure configuration.

Necessary Knowledge and Skills

Strong analytical, communication, and organizational skills. Non-profit accounting preferred, and strong knowledge of GAAP accounting rules.  Familiarity with Workday, Adaptive or similar accounting, budgeting and planning systems.

Supervision 

One direct report.

Salary Information

National Geographic Society offers a competitive and holistic total rewards package. Our compensation structure and transparent pay philosophy are based on industry-specific market data for similar sized nonprofit organizations.

The pay hourly range for this position is $135,000 - $160,000

Pay offered to candidates will be based on several factors including but not limited to industry-based or other relevant work experience, education, skills, certifications, and training.

Job Designation

As a result, the majority of our staff are Hybrid. Our Hybrid category requires that staff work at Base Camp two days each week: every Tuesday and Wednesday.
