About GWC: Founded in 2001, the Garment Worker Center is a worker rights organization leading an anti-sweatshop movement to improve conditions for tens of thousands of Los Angeles garment workers. Through direct organizing, GWC develops leaders who demand enforcement of strong labor laws and accountability from factory owners, manufacturers, and fashion brands. We center immigrant workers, women of color, and their families who are impacted by exploitation in the fashion industry.


Position description:  GWC seeks a dedicated community-centered Case Manager for our growing Legal Clinic. The Case Manager is responsible for coordinating the logistical and clerical needs of our Legal Clinic to ensure we are providing efficient and responsive assistance. The Case Manager also acts as a liaison between the Clinic and GWC organizing staff to assist with membership building.


Job Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and attend weekly Downtown LA and monthly regional clinics, including scheduling and preparing materials.
  • Conduct intakes, including case-related questions and workers’ interest in organizing.
  • Collect case documentation and evidence.
  • Document  case events in our case management system and assist with  calendaring deadlines, events for cases.
  • Support Staff Attorneys with follow-up calls to clients.
  • Prepare claim forms with clients for submission to the CA Labor Commission.
  • Schedule appointments with clients including for case updates and preparation for settlement conferences and hearings.
  • Collaborate with the Data Coordinator for all data entry.
  • Coordinate referrals for client needs outside the scope of the Clinic, in collaboration with Member Support Coordinators.
  • Participate in regular case review meetings.
  • Support Staff Attorneys and Paralegal with preparation of files for settlement conferences and hearings.
  • Support Staff Attorneys in attending settlement conferences and hearings, as needed.
  • Assist clients with ITIN applications.
  • Learn about  wage and hour and retaliation law and maintain informed about changes to those laws.
  • Support with facilitation of Know Your Rights trainings, as needed or desired.
  • Act as a welcoming, encouraging pipeline between the Clinic and GWC Organizers to facilitate membership building.


Skills and Experience

  • 1-3 years of related case-management experience.
  • Experience with trauma-informed interview skills. (Preferred but not required.)
  • Experience with  worker rights and/or employment law. (Preferred but not required.)
  • Strong commitment to racial, gender, and economic justice and their intersections.
  • Knowledge of the garment industry. (Preferred but not required.)
  • Self-motivated, able to set priorities and goals, and also work well in collective settings.
  • Detail-oriented, organized,  and able to meet deadlines.
