    NY Sun Works is a non-profit organization that builds innovative science labs in NYC public schools. Through our Hydroponic Classroom program, we use hydroponic farming technology to educate students and teachers about the science of sustainability. We envision a generation of environmental innovators empowered to create solutions to global challenges.

    Position Overview

    We are seeking an experienced and results-driven Part-Time Grant Writer to lead our grant development efforts. The ideal candidate will have at least 7 years of proven experience in nonprofit grant writing with a successful track record in securing local, state, federal, and private foundation funding.

    This role involves managing the entire grant cycle from identifying prospects and developing compelling proposals to ensuring timely reporting and compliance with grant requirements.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Conduct proactive grant prospecting to identify new funding opportunities aligned with our mission and programs
    • Develop and write compelling grant proposals, letters of inquiry, and supporting materials
    • Manage and maintain a grant calendar to ensure timely submissions and reporting deadlines
    • Maintain accurate grant records and documentation
    • Collaborate with program staff to gather relevant data and impact stories
    • Write and submit comprehensive grant reports in accordance with funder guidelines
    • Track the outcomes related to grants and provide regular updates to leadership
    • Provide strategic input on funding trends and opportunities

    Qualifications

    • Minimum of 7 years of grant writing experience, preferably in the environmental education, sustainability, or youth development sectors
    • Demonstrated track record of successful grant awards from private foundations, corporations, and government agencies
    • Strong research skills and familiarity with NYC and national funding landscapes
    • Experience with Instrumental, or other grants management database
    • Ability to gather and analyze organizational data from CRM and other program implementation impact evaluation tools
    • Excellent writing, editing, and storytelling skills with the ability to tailor content for diverse audiences
    • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple deadlines
    • Comfortable working independently and collaboratively with a small team
    • Passion for climate education, sustainability, and sustainable food systems
    • Experience in the public school system preferred, but not required

    Work Location and Schedule

    • Part-time: (16–24 hours/week)
    • Flexible schedule: must work in-office at least 2 days per week (ideally 3 days per week in office)
    • Salary: $35000/YR - $53000/YR (Depending on experience and how many days)
