Rides Program Manager

What We Need

Cascade Bicycle Club is seeking our next Rides Program Manager. The Rides Program Manager will serve our dynamic, well-established, and respected organization by demonstrating a passion for bicycling, an ability to collaborate with people from a range of backgrounds and with differing perspectives, and a passion for creating inclusive and welcoming spaces to grow the joy of riding bicycles in our region.

The Rides Program Manager oversees, manages, and promotes Cascade Bicycle Club’s Rides Program, including Free Group Rides (FGR), Cascade Training Series and other riding series, and supports Cascade’s Major Events. Free Group Rides are a core component of how Cascade Bicycle Club engages with the Puget Sound Bicycling Community. This unique program involves 280+ volunteer Ride Leaders who create and support over 2,000 annual unique rides open to the public, ideal for both established and new-to-bicycling riders.

Additionally, this position plays a key support role in the execution of Cascade’s Major events, which involves 14 on-bike events including the Seattle to Portland Bicycle Classic and Chilly Hilly. This position reports to the Events Director and is a member of the events team. The estimated programmatic breakdown of time is:

• Free Group Rides (55%)
• Cascade Training Series (25%)
• Events support (20%)

Cascade Bicycle Club, the nation's largest statewide bicycle nonprofit, is 9,500-members, 55-years old, and 51-staff strong, serving bike riders of all ages and abilities throughout the state of Washington. We teach the joys of bicycling, advocate for safe places to ride, and produce community rides and events. What You’ll Bring

Duties and Responsibilities

• Oversee the planning, execution, and evaluation of all rides programs, ensuring alignment with organizational goals, budgets, and values.
  • Develop systems, infrastructure, and processes that support efficient operations, safety, and program growth.
  • Create monthly ride program newsletters to keep the volunteer cohort informed of policies, programs, safety and other Cascade-related items.
  • Organize and host quarterly Ride Leader community gatherings to foster recognition and excitement for the program and to enhance enthusiasm and partnership within the volunteer cohort.
• Lead and support volunteer committees, Ride Leaders, and program partners to deliver high-quality rides. Build capacity through recruitment, training, recognition, and ongoing leadership development to expand and diversify participation and leadership.
  • Serve as staff lead for the Free Group Rides Committee and chair the Cascade Training Series Steering Committee
  • Partner with committee members to evaluate program performance, strengthen safety practices, and drive innovation in ride offerings.
• Cultivate partnerships with community organizations, local businesses, and other stakeholders to broaden access, promote equity, and develop new ride opportunities in underrepresented communities.
• Provide organizational accountability by responding to rider feedback and questions, and dealing with interpersonal conflicts that may arise related to safety or the Cascade Code of Conduct.
• Secure new volunteers for the programs; both people already with the Cascade eco-system, and new community members. Assist with certification of volunteer Ride Leaders.
• Work cross-functionally with departments such as Advocacy, Education, Events, and Communications to ensure that the rides program supports and enhances Cascade’s broader mission and initiatives.
• Use data and feedback to assess program effectiveness, ensure safety and quality standards, and guide continuous improvement efforts including growing the diversity of rides and Ride Leaders.
• Develop methods for continuing education for Ride Leaders that continue to provide this key volunteer group with the resources and training (e.g. implicit bias training, leadership and technical skills, etc.) they need to be successful in a Ride Leader role at Cascade.
• Contribute to the successful execution of major events and seasonal operations as part of Cascade’s professional events team.

Skills and Competencies

• Diplomatic, with a strong ability to build positive relationships with a diverse array of volunteers, especially those with divergent perspectives. Comfortable having tough conversations.
• Familiarity with participation and leading group bicycle rides and group riding best practices is a plus
• Patience and ability to coach.
• Desire to build communities that bicycle and to bring the opportunity to bicycle to underserved and diverse communities and to people that represent a wide range of comfort and familiarity with bicycle riding for transportation and recreation.
• Experience in promoting equity and inclusiveness within programming and a desire to center equity in this work
• Experience and capability with digital media platforms, including Ride with GPS, Facebook groups, and Strava, as tools to communicate about rides, and identify potential new ride leaders.
• Proven project management experience.
• Strong communication skills, including newsletter drafting.
• Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently as well as in teams.
• Ability to meet deadlines, be attentive to detail, and to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
• Salesforce experience is a plus.
• Certification as a Cascade Free Group Ride Leader is expected within one year of start date.

Qualifications

• One to three years of volunteer management experience.
• Experience supporting racial, health, mobility, and/or environmental equity and justice programs or policy outcomes
• Demonstrated ability to work with a variety of personality types, facilitate large groups, and provide stellar customer service.
• This position requires a person to be able to lift up to 45 lbs to load and unload event trucks as well as bend, lift, and move.
• This position requires a valid Washington driver license or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire.
• Availability and willingness to frequently work evenings, weekends, and odd hours to lead rides and events.
• Comfort driving large vans and U-Hauls preferred.

Job Details

This position is full-time non-exempt and remote-hybrid eligible. Generally, work can be done off-site, provided there is no loss to team collaboration, the needs of the organization, and the essential functions of the position. However, residence in Washington state and the ability to come into the office one day a week is required. During event season (April-September), this position requires regular prep work at the office in Magnuson Park and presence at events in the greater Puget Sound region. Typical weekly hours for this position are 40 hours. In event season this includes regular evening and weekend work.
