The Opportunity
AAF is seeking a full-time Controller with extensive experience in technical accounting within the nonprofit sector. The Controller will play a crucial role in maintaining the accuracy of financial records, implementing efficient accounting processes, and ensuring compliance with accounting principles.
The ideal candidate is someone with 7+ years of experience navigating the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) guidelines; working with financial reports and budgeting; who has the ability to forecast; and who is extremely detail-oriented, with a passion for process improvement. This person will report to the Deputy Director and manage one accountant.
The Controller’s responsibilities include:
● Prepare AAF’s financial statements and lead the preparation of the annual audit;
● Review any gifts and grants received to ensure proper accounting and reporting, as well as spending compliance of grants with donor restrictions;
● Maintain current knowledge of GAAP; federal and state policies and directives; and accounting changes;
● Execute and oversee day-to-day accounting processes and financial reporting in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP);
● Lead the preparation of regulatory filings and AAF's financial statements;
● Collaborate with departmental directors to design program budgets and monitor revenues and expenditures;
● Provide monthly reports on budget versus actuals, with updated year-end projections;
● Analyze and address unusual variances in budget and cash flow, providing timely updates and explanations to management;
● Supervise cash flow management to maintain a required fluid cash position;
● Ensure the confidentiality of financial information and plans, enforcing internal controls and reporting systems;
● Coach, counsel, and oversee the performance of staff accountant;
● Periodically review general ledger transactions, including receivables, payables, and payroll, making necessary adjustments;
● Other duties as assigned.
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of the following professional and personal qualities, skills, and characteristics:
● 7+ years of relevant work experience, including experience in a senior financial role within a nonprofit;
● Strong financial analytical skills and extensive knowledge of nonprofit financial accounting and reporting requirements;
● Knowledge of QuickBooks Online;
● Experience with cloud-based accounting systems desired;
● Exceptional detail orientation and time management skills;
● Alignment with AAF’s values of policy advocacy, public awareness, and nonprofit support;
● Familiarity with the City of New York Health and Human Services Cost Policies and Procedures manual a plus;
● A Bachelor's degree in Accounting or equivalent academic background or experience is ideal, with a preference for candidates pursuing a Master's degree in Accounting;
● Ability to work closely with a diverse team.
