Virginia-Based Mental Health Therapist (Contract, 4-6 hours a week)

Asian/Pacific Islander Domestic Violence Resource Project (A/PI DVRP) supports and mobilizes Asian/Pacific Islanders to build safer communities by responding to harm and striving to end gender and power-based violence.  Since 1995, The Asian/Pacific Islander Domestic Violence Resource Project (DVRP) has provided services to survivors of domestic violence in Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia.  It is an organization that was founded by survivors and continues to be survivor-led and driven.   

The Mental Health Therapist (MHT) is a contract (4-6 hours per week) position working in collaboration with DVRP’s Survivor Services Program to provide counseling and therapy to DVRP’s Virginia based clients.  While this position will be mostly virtual, the MHT will be required to attend in-person meetings at least once per quarter.   

The MHT will directly interact with clients by applying specialized clinical knowledge and advanced clinical skills to assess and treat emotional trauma associated with domestic violence and sexual assault. Working closely within the Survivor Services team, the therapist will provide individual counseling and psychotherapy as well as in-depth case management to comprehensively address needs and help clients move forward in their healing journey.  The Mental Health Therapist reports to the Survivor Services Program Manager.  

Note: DVRP currently does not provide supervision for LGPC or LMSW candidates 

DIRECT CLIENT SERVICES:  

• Use specialized clinical knowledge and advanced clinical skills to assess, diagnose, and treat mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders, conditions, and serious emotional disturbances in adult survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.  
• Through a culturally competent, trauma informed lens, apply theory, knowledge, methods, ethics, and the professional use of self to restore and enhance social and psychosocial functioning of clients through regular therapy sessions.  
• Assess lethality and provide crisis management counseling in ongoing therapy sessions.  
• Integrate various therapeutic interventions such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), and Motivational Interviewing (MI) into counseling sessions with clients.  
• Organize and conduct support groups and workshops for clients and staff. 

REPORTING:  

• Track client calls, maintain appropriate client records and files and monthly reports.  
• Maintain the client database.  

MISSION AND VISION PROMOTION: 

• Promote atmosphere of teamwork and collaboration to accomplish all DVRP initiatives  
• Attend and contribute to staff meetings and other internal meetings as required 
• Serve as speaker/trainer for DVRP by participating in community education programs as needed 

QUALIFICATIONS:   

• Licensure in Social Work or Counseling required  
• Possess a license (LMSW, LPC, LICSW) in Commonwealth of Virginia 
• Master’s degree (in Counseling or Social Work) from an accredited University required  
• Experience in service provision in the Asian/Pacific Islander community 
• Minimum 3 years clinical work experience providing individual, family and group therapy to A/PI population, required 
• Must have a commitment to DVRP’s mission, vision, and atmosphere of collaboration  
• Must show excellent writing, reporting and communication skills   
• Must be well-organized, highly motivated, and detail-oriented  
• Fluency in at least one Asian/Pacific Islander language.  Preferably, Mandarin, Cantonese, Vietnamese, Japanese, Urdu or Hindi 
• Proficiency in computer applications and utilization of online resources to meet client and organizational needs  
•  Experience working in a non-profit environment preferred
