    Reports to: Chief Medical Officer

    Location: Remote or Hybrid NYC Tri-State Area

    POSITION SUMMARY:

    The Chief of Staff (COS) to the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) serves as the primary thought partner, key adviser, and strategic support to the CMO office, duties and functions. Responsibilities include strategic decision making, prioritizing and leading on behalf of the CMO, partnering with members of the CMO Team and various departments to identify gaps and opportunities for increased collaboration, communication, process improvements and efficiencies.

    The COS accurately represents and executes the CMO’s vision, cultivating strong working relationships both internally and externally. The COS must be an extremely organized, strategic and big picture thinker with excellent communication skills, time management and project management skills. The COS operates with a high level of diplomacy, discretion and independence and should be a stabilizing force in a fast-paced environment with an ability to process and act on large amounts of information continuously.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Effectively manage daily tasks and duties in support of the CMO, with a proactive, strategic and self-directed approach.
    • Prioritize and manage the CMO’s time efficiently, owning the preparation and coordination for all internal and external meetings; ensure the CMO’s calendar and travel are well managed in collaboration with the Executive Assistant.
    • Serve as an extension and representative of the CMO both internally and externally; facilitating the timely communication and follow through of next steps
    • Direct the Year-Round Care Team, ensuring timely, sensitive and appropriate responses to outreach from staff around working with the Lived Experience Community. Direct the Conference Care Team, ensuring conferences are appropriately staffed for 24/7 support, Care Team members are appropriately prepared, and key learnings are integrated into future Care Team responses.
    • Vet, prioritize and manage external speaking and writing opportunities. Ensure CMO is adequately prepared and work with CMO to ensure all necessary materials are developed, designed and submitted on time. Preparation includes but is not limited to: working with external point of contact to determine their goals and objectives and logistical details, drafting CMO talking points and learning objectives, gathering bio/headshot, completing disclosures, and ensuring travel plan document is prepared in advance.
    • Vet, prioritize and manage on-camera, online/print media, and radio interviews in collaboration with AFSP’s Communications/Public Relations Team. Ensure CMO is adequately prepared and has all necessary information from AFSP PR Team in advance.
    • Manage CMO social media posts in collaboration with Communications/PR/social media Team.
    • Partner with AFSP team leaders for execution of cross-departmental projects, ensuring optimal communication, collaboration and preparation to achieve the CMO’s vision.
    • Conduct basic literature reviews and write brief summaries with research citations.
    • Manage CMO office which oversees $20M+ budget and expenditure for AFSP’s program areas.
    • Other duties/projects as assigned by CMO.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    Education Bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology, public health or similar area of people-oriented focus or experience. Master's degree preferred.

    Experience and/or Training

    Seven to 10 years of executive support, operational and/or strategic function roles.

    Expert communication and writing skills required.

    Experience with social media as a medium for public health education required.

    Subject matter experience preferred.

    Technology/Equipment Microsoft Office Suite and other office equipment and tools
