RideWise Inc., a Somerville nonprofit dedicated to promoting safe and sustainable travel, is excited to announce an opening for a full-time School Based Initiatives Specialist. This grant-funded role is responsible for creating partnerships with K-12 schools on projects and activities that encourage students to walk and bicycle to school. It involves education, events and collaboration with schools, law enforcement and community partners to grow the agency’s Safe Routes to School program.
Essential functions:
- Plan and coordinate school-based events such as bike rodeos, walk-to-school days, walking school buses, bike buses, and other activities that encourage safe walking and biking.
- Develop and deliver school-based educational programs for students on bicycle safety, and pedestrian safety.
- Conduct walkability/bikeability assessments for schools; work with schools to develop school travel plans; assist with pedestrian safety campaigns.
- Track and document program activities, participation data, and photographs for monthly and quarterly written reports.
- Aid in program research and evaluation as needed; conduct field work and collect data to evaluate programming (arrival & dismissal observations, surveys, focus groups)
- Build and maintain positive working relationships with school staff, administrators, law enforcement agencies and community partners.
- Support and participate in community activities that promote biking and walking.
Candidates must complete a background check as a condition of employment and be fingerprinted upon hire. Candidates must be a League of American Cyclists Certified Instructor or acquire the certification when the training becomes available (paid by RideWise).
Work schedule:
This full-time, hourly role is based at the Somerville office, Monday to Friday, with occasional weekends, evenings, or early mornings required. Overtime is not required. Scheduling is flexible as long as most work is performed during standard office hours.
Key Skills & Qualifications:
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, MS Teams)
- Bachelor’s degree in marketing, education, sports management, fitness
- Must be knowledgeable in/able to demonstrate safe bicycling and walking skills for all age groups
- Must have a reliable vehicle, valid driver’s license, valid vehicle insurance, and good driving record to get to/from the office and for travel/fieldwork throughout Somerset County.
- Must be able to walk/bicycle up to 2 miles
- Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds (transporting materials)
- Must be able to work occasional early mornings, nights and weekends
- Demonstrated ability to manage projects with minimal supervision and tight deadlines
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate across inter-departmental teams e.g. marketing, project/program specialists)
- Ability to achieve specific and measurable grant-related performance outcomes
- Prior nonprofit experience
- Familiarity with Somerset County area a plus
