Bloomberg Associates (BA) is Bloomberg Philanthropies’ pro bono consulting service founded by Michael 

R. Bloomberg, the 108th Mayor of New York City and Founder of Bloomberg LP, as a philanthropic venture. We provide services to cities that help governments improve the quality of life of their citizens. BA works across nine (9) different focus areas: Cultural Assets Management, Marketing & Communications, Media and Digital Strategies, Municipal Integrity, Social Services, Sustainability, Transportation, Economic Development and Urban Planning, with teams that have deep subject matter expertise and extensive experience in municipal government. 

 

Position Description:

The Tree Campaign Fellow will play a key role in assisting the Newark Office of Sustainability with Community Engagement for a citywide Tree Planting Campaign. Reporting to the Chief Sustainability Officer and Tree Superintendent, the Fellow will have the opportunity to work closely with residents in Newark, community-based organizations, and businesses to promote awareness about the importance of trees and tree care activities to enhance Newark's urban forest. 

The Fellow would work about 15 to 20 hours a week.  The Fellow would be on an initial 6-month contract.  The Fellow would work remotely but should be located in the Newark, NJ area. S/he will need to be a self-starter, highly organized, an excellent communicator and comfortable working with limited supervision. 

 

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Develop and implement a community engagement plan to support tree planting and greening of Newark, including messaging and communications.  
  2. Convene and conduct community meetings, workshops, and events to build support and foster coalitions for a Tree Planting Initiative. The fellow will represent the Sustainability Office and engage with residents on tree planting and tree care initiatives.  
  3. Conduct outreach efforts to raise awareness about the environmental, social, and economic benefits of trees within the Newark community.  
  4. Develop and implement educational materials and presentations to communicate the importance of urban forestry and the benefits that trees bring to urban environments.  
  5. Collaborate with local community-based organizations, neighborhood associations, and businesses to facilitate tree planting projects and green initiatives.  
  6. Meet regularly with Newark residents, community leaders, and stakeholders to gather input, address concerns, and build partnerships.  
  7. Assist in the organization and coordination of volunteer-led tree planting events and workshops throughout the city of Newark.  
  8. Collaborate with other Departments within the City of Newark to build support for these efforts and ensure all parties are informed of relevant events.  
  9. Support the Chief Sustainability Officer and Tree Superintendent in other related tasks and projects as needed.  

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of Newark’s neighborhoods and familiarity with Newark’s community-based organizations and key stakeholders. 
  • Bachelor's degree and/or current student and/or 2 years profession experience in environmental studies, urban planning, sustainability, or related field.  
  • Strong passion for environmental conservation and community engagement.  
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively engage with diverse stakeholders.  
  • Prior experience in community outreach, event planning, volunteer coordination, and grant writing is desirable.  
  • Knowledge of urban forestry, tree care practices, and environmental issues is a plus.  
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.  
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite   
  • Knowledge of GIS software is advantageous.  
  • Must be available to work a maximum of 20 hours per week and commit to the full 6-month fellowship duration. Note that community meetings may occur outside of regular business hours and/or on weekends.

Pay Range Per Hour: $25.50-$30 

This role will be part-time, ranging from 15 – 20 hours per week.  

  

The referenced pay range is based on the Company's good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level.
