    About Border Butterflies Project

Border Butterflies is a project anchored by the Black LGBTQIA Migrant Project, Transgender Law Center, Familia: Trans Queer Liberation Movement, and other Tijuana based organizations. The project aims to support LGBTQ+ asylum seekers at the US-Mexico border with legal, humanitarian, post-detention, and organizing support.

    About the Position

The Director of Case Management will lead and expand the Border Butterflies Project’s case management program, ensuring that LGBTQ+ asylum seekers across the United States and at the southern border receive effective, coordinated, and compassionate support. This role requires both strategic program development and hands-on case management.

With 300 active participants—ranging from light-touch support to intensive wraparound services—the Director will oversee a team of staff while also taking on cases directly, particularly when triage is needed or gaps arise. The ideal candidate is a trauma-informed leader who can balance staff supervision, burnout prevention, and boundary-setting with a deep commitment to participant care. The Director will design and implement strategies to scale services, improve risk assessment and harm reduction practices, and ensure responsive, participant-centered support.

    Key Responsibilities

    Program Leadership & Development

    • Build and expand the case management program to meet the evolving needs of LGBTQ+ asylum seekers across the United States and at the Southern border in Tijuana.
    • Design systems for triage, risk assessment, and harm reduction to prioritize and respond to acute and ongoing participant needs.
    • Develop and implement strategies for scaling services and improving wraparound care.

    Staff Supervision & Support

    • Work with staff and volunteers to triage urgent participant needs, identify priorities, and coordinate timely responses.
    • Oversee staff caseloads to model best practices and remain grounded in service delivery.
    • Supervise, train, and mentor case management staff, ensuring high-quality, trauma-informed service delivery.
    • Support staff in maintaining healthy boundaries and adopting burnout-prevention practices.
    • Foster a collaborative, compassionate, and accountable team culture.
    • Provide direct case management support when staff capacity is exceeded or in complex cases.

    Partnerships & Community Relationships

    • Cultivate and strengthen relationships with organizations across the country to connect participants to essential resources, including housing, food, healthcare, and legal services.
    • Serve as a key liaison between the Border Butterflies Project and external service providers.

    Trauma-Informed Practice

    • Integrate trauma-informed care principles into all aspects of case management and staff supervision.
    • Implement organizational practices that prioritize participant dignity, agency, and safety.
    • Model and implement resilience and sustainability strategies for staff working with high-need populations.

    Qualifications & Requirements

    • Previous Experience
      • Minimum 5–7 years of experience in case management, social work, or related field, including direct service with LGBTQ+ and/or migrant communities.
      • At least 3 years of supervisory or program leadership experience, ideally in a nonprofit or community-based setting.
      • Masters of Social Work required.
    • Core Skills & Competencies
      • Proven ability to design, scale, and implement case management programs in dynamic, high-need contexts.
      • Demonstrated expertise in trauma-informed care, harm reduction, and risk assessment.
      • Skilled in triage and prioritization, with capacity to manage multiple requests under pressure.
      • Excellent relationship-building skills with diverse organizations and service providers nationwide.
      • Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to balance big-picture strategy and hands-on service delivery.
      • Must be fluent in Spanish and English. Fluency in other languages a strong plus.
    • Leadership & Values
      • Commitment to mentoring and supporting staff through boundary-setting and burnout prevention strategies.
      • Ability to foster a collaborative, accountable, and compassionate team culture.
      • Flexible and adaptive leadership style, willing to step in with direct case management when needed.
      • Deep understanding of intersecting oppressions including anti-Blackness, white supremacy, transphobia, ableism, misogyny, colonialism, and capitalism.
      • Demonstrated capacity to provide a welcoming presence to clients experiencing trauma, and a demonstrated client-centered, trauma-informed perspective and cultural responsibility to the diverse populations we serve.
