    ORGANIZATION: FHJC is a non-profit civil rights organization that serves New York City and the seven suburbanNew York countiesof Dutchess, Nassau,Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Suffolk, and Westchester. Our mission is to: 1) challenge and eliminate housing discrimination; 2) promote policies that foster open, accessible, and inclusive communities; and 3) strengthen the enforcement of local, state, and federal fair housing laws.

    POSITION SUMMARY: FHJC is seeking an experienced Paralegal to help FHJC vindicate the fair housing rights of New Yorkers by making housing available and accessible. The Paralegal will support the Legal Director in coordinating the collection and distribution of legal documents within the FHJC.

    REPORTS TO: Legal Director

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    1. Maintaining FHJC’s database of active and settled cases in coordination with the Legal Director.
    2. Coordinating the monitoring of and compliance with settlement agreements.
    3. Tracking Legal team grant reporting data collection, and maintenance.
    4. Mapping and reorganizing FHJC’s legal file management system.
    5. Assist the Disability Justice Advocate with the Adele Friedman Housing Accessibility Fund, which provides people with advice on reasonable modifications and, in pertinent cases, with funding for those modifications.
    6. Under the supervision and direction of the Legal Director and Disability Justice Advocate, draft letters on behalf of individuals with disabilities seeking reasonable accommodations and modifications.
    7. Collaborate with the Intake and Investigations Teams to collect documents ahead of litigation.
    8. Project-manage major legal team initiatives such as trainings and events.
    9. Other related duties as assigned by the Legal Director.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Minimum three to five years’ paralegal experience in fair housing, civil rights, and/or disability rights cases.
    • Capacity to manage long-term, multi-step projects from start to finish.
    • Extremely strong attentiveness to detail in written work.
    • Ability to multitask and prioritize multiple important projects at once.
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
    • Background in government housing benefits, disability, and landlord-tenant law is a plus.

    SALARY AND BENEFITS: The salary for the role is $65,000 - $75,000 annually. This is a full-time position with a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, vision, life, and disability coverage, paid time off (including parental leave), transportation benefit, stipend for use of personal phone, and an employer-matched retirement plan. This position requires work primarily from the FHJC's office in Long Island City, Queens, NY.
