ABOUT THE POSITION

Day One seeks a full-time Community Educator to join our Training Department. The Community Educator will deliver preventive and informative workshops on teen dating abuse in schools and youth-serving spaces to young people between the ages of 11-24, school-based staff, youth-serving professionals, and parents/caregivers. 

The Community Educator will deliver Day One’s teen dating abuse prevention curriculum throughout NYC, conduct outreach, participate in awareness-building events and activities, and link young people to resources. 

ABOUT DAY ONE

Since 2003, Day One has been the only organization in New York devoting its full resources to preventing intimate partner violence (IPV) among young people. Day One partners with youth to end dating abuse and domestic violence through preventive education, supportive services, legal advocacy, and leadership development. Our multi-disciplinary approach brings together a highly collaborative staff with expertise in legal assistance, social services, and education service provision. Through the Training Team, Day One educates young people in schools and youth programs about IPV, consent, and healthy relationships and trains professionals and parents to support young people experiencing abuse. 

Day One recognizes that anti-violence work is emotionally demanding and professionally complex. We strive to create an office culture that invests in the wellness of staff and leads to employee sustainability. Office policies are designed to promote healthful practices and establish a supportive and collaborative environment for and among staff. 

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

  • Conduct community outreach and awareness activities throughout New York City;
  • Build and manage relationships with schools, CBOs, and government agencies throughout NYC 
  • Teach a healthy relationships curriculum addressing dating abuse, gender, relationship stereotypes, sexual assault/consent, and coercion to youth ages 11-24. 
  • Facilitate trainings for school-based staff, youth-serving professionals, parents, and caregivers on teen dating abuse and supporting youth survivors 
  • Respond to and coordinate workshop requests; monitor youth workshop request form 
  • Assist in the development of materials and workshops for use in the Training Program and other programs as needed 
  • Work with Day One staff to determine program direction and expansion, including participating in strategic planning and program evaluation activities 
  • Participate in meetings with city council members and program funders 
  • Represent Day One at community-based events, panels, and conferences 
  • Assist in tracking program data through maintenance of databases and measurement tools 
  • Maintain a flexible schedule, allowing for early morning, evening or occasional weekend workshops or presentations
  • Help create and maintain a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace and learning environment, and commit to principles combating racism and gender inequality 

Qualifications 

  • At least 3 years of relevant experience or a Bachelor’s Degree with at least 1 year of relevant experience 
  • Experience facilitating for groups of youth and adults 
  • Knowledge in any or all of the following areas: community outreach and engagement, anti-violence work, prevention, learning styles, and engagement tools 
  • Facility working with diverse groups of youth, including lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and gender-nonconforming youth; immigrant youth; youth in care; and/or low-income communities 
  • Facility working within systems where youth are located, primarily within schools, and skills to navigate the challenges and opportunities that school-based work presents 
  • Experience with Zoom and virtual learning a plus 
  • Ability to facilitate workshops in Spanish preferred 
  • Ability to work independently and in a collaborative setting 
  • Commitment to the empowerment of young people
