Job Description: This position is a student support role which requires the management, delivery and implementation of core interventions and services for all target students and their families specified in the annual GEAR-UP work plans and budgets. The coordinators will develop and implement the plans for all targeted students and families to foster student success. The Gear-Up grant program is a federally funded partnership between Foundation for the Mid South and Delta State University. The name Gear-Up represents and stands for “Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs”.

The coordinator collaborates with target schools, students, parents, and partnerships to ensure that all educational services and support are effectively and consistently executed. The coordinator’s primary responsibility is to promote the following.

  • Students’ successful academic performance at all transition levels Students’ successful high school completion
  • Students’ expanded knowledge and awareness of all post-secondary placement options
  • Parents expanded knowledge and awareness of all post-secondary placement options.
  • Increased educational expectations for post-secondary education.
  • Serve as a member of the local GEAR-Up site team.
  • Meet and facilitate team meetings with students regarding post-secondary opportunities, academic work, and requirements necessary to meet all Mississippi Academic standards and graduation requirements.
  • Provide parents and students with necessary resources and grade level appropriate information regarding college and career readiness options as well as financial aid and scholarship opportunities for all GEAR-UP students.
  • Facilitate group meetings with students and parents around college planning and career options.
  • Monitor and provide outreach to former GEAR-UP students who have withdrawn from the program.
  • Organize, recognize, and celebrate GEAR-UP student’s success periodically (every nine-weeks, bi-weekly or quarterly).
  • Review, monitor and track all data related to the successes of the project, student participation, assessment results, attendance, behaviors, expectations, quality of services and student achievement.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records and files of student data and participation in GEAR-UP activities and submit this data accordingly.
  • Maintain effective evaluations of all sessions conducted with students and parents
  • Complete weekly work reports and submit them in a timely manner identified by the supervisor.
  • Attend weekly team meetings at the Foundation for the Mid South location in Jackson, Mississippi.

Responsibility:

Review, monitor, and track GEAR-UP students’ academic standings, grades, attendance, behavior, promotion/graduation status and daily/weekly grade level assignments and work.

Qualifications

  •  Bachelor’s Degree or higher in counseling, social work, child development, education, or related field
  • Current teacher license (Mississippi license preferred)
  • At least one year’s experience working with students in middle and high school.
  • Successful experience working in the field of education or student support roles.
  • Knowledgeable of post-secondary education options, admission application processes, financial aid, and scholarships
  • Strong communication/organizational skills, interpersonal abilities, and leadership potential
  •  Experienced in organizing programs, overseeing budgets, and coordinating student/parent meetings.
