Opportunity

IRAP’s Pro Bono department is hiring a Pro Bono Staff Attorney to help respond to the needs of displaced people by developing and implementing high impact projects and leveraging IRAP’s partner networks. The Pro Bono Staff Attorney will be dedicated to developing and managing projects and training, mobilizing, and mentoring other attorneys and law students on cases and projects. The position also involves maintaining a smaller docket of in-house and pro bono cases.


Responsibilities

  • Help manage and provide legal supervision to the department’s pro bono project seeking to assist displaced individuals with family reunification (e.g. I-130, I-730) petitions.
  • Maintain a small docket of pro bono and in-house intakes and cases.
  • Work with the Pro Bono team to help design, implement, and provide legal work and supervision to projects that leverage IRAP’s pro bono network to address unmet legal needs.
  • Develop and conduct substantive and skills trainings, other webinars, and written resources for pro bono attorneys and law students.
  • Build and manage relationships with partner organizations that work with IRAP’s pro bono network.
  • Represent the Pro Bono department on IRAP cross-departmental committees and liaise with other departments to support the development of new projects.
  • Other tasks as assigned.


Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree required. 
  • J.D. required.


Experience:

  • 1-3 years of U.S. immigration law work experience (Spring 2023 graduates welcome to apply). 
  • Specific experience working on I-130, I-730, and other family reunification case types preferred.
  • Experience developing and managing complex projects. 
  • Experience working with students and/or legal volunteers.
  • Experience working with displaced or marginalized communities.

  • Ability to be a team player while also being able to work independently, take initiative, and identify potential problems and propose solutions.
  • Sensitivity to client empowerment and to working with clients of all backgrounds, including LGBTI clients, survivors of trauma, and other vulnerable populations.
  • Familiarity with technology systems, including Microsoft, Adobe, and Google Suite. Familiarity with Salesforce is a plus.
  • Excellent oral and written English proficiency is required. Excellent skills in other languages (particularly Spanish, Arabic, Dari, and Pashto) are a plus, but not required.


Location: The candidate will work in one of IRAP’s U.S.-based offices (New York City or Washington D.C.) but remote work candidates in the U.S. will be considered.  If based in DC or remote, the position would require semi-frequent travel to New York and potentially other locations in the U.S.


Compensation

This role is paid on a step scale based on years of work experience and education. The salary will be between $63,140 - $78,041.
