Talent and Culture Associate

Protect Democracy seeks a highly motivated Talent and Culture Associate to join our small, collaborative Talent and Culture team. This team is responsible for strengthening our inclusive and participatory culture, and growing our organization, through virtual culture building and in-person events, growth and learning programs, recruiting and hiring, high-touch onboarding, and other initiatives that help our organization deliver impact toward our mission. At Protect Democracy, we anchor our work in service of the mission to prevent American democracy from declining into a more authoritarian form of government. The mission is the foundation of everyone’s work, be it litigation, advocacy, or ensuring that our organization has the stellar talent and strong internal culture to meet the urgency and the importance of the pro-democracy movement.

In this generalist role, you will be a champion for internal culture, supporting the programs and projects that are vital to our organizational health and critical for our ability to have external mission impact. In the immediate term, your work will involve implementing ongoing initiatives to foster connection, community, belonging, and resilience within and across the team, including planning and implementing virtual and in-person events, administering our high-touch onboarding program, and supporting learning and growth programming. In the longer term, especially during periods of organizational growth, this role may also support recruiting and hiring efforts by conducting interviews and reference checks, managing candidate experience, and administering overall hiring processes to bring exceptional talent to our mission.

The Talent and Culture Associate will:

• Support and contribute to the ongoing work of the Talent and Culture team, including implementing community-building events and team retreats and other culture-focused initiatives;
• Infuse creative energy and collaborative spirit in developing strategies to sustain team engagement, employee satisfaction, and belonging;
• Implement our high-touch onboarding program to seamlessly integrate new hires into our culture. This includes collecting and applying insights to improve each onboarding cycle and proposing new ways to welcome and integrate staff;
• Support recruiting and hiring, ensuring positive, candidate-centered experiences at each step of the hiring process;
• Contribute to initiatives that advance how we build the capacity of the organization and increase our organizational effectiveness;
• Administer efforts to enhance employees’ experiences and foster connections, collaboration, and community across Protect Democracy.

The ideal candidate brings:

• A passionate commitment to the preservation and strengthening of democratic norms and institutions, and an understanding that our democracy has never fully represented communities of color;
• Enthusiasm for human-centered work in a remote-first organization;
• Relevant experience (or professional interest) in any of the following:
• Implementing recruiting, hiring, and onboarding processes and programs
• Designing and running virtual and/or in-person community-building events and retreats,
• Supporting learning and development initiatives; 
• Interest in improving internal processes and systems to best support our work and overall mission;
• Ability to foster collaborative relationships and work in a dispersed work environment across staff with diverse backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives;
• Rigorous attention to detail and the highest standards for excellence in execution;
• Ability to track, prioritize, and balance a diverse set of responsibilities;
• Growth mindset and enthusiasm for giving and receiving feedback up, down and sideways.

Compensation

The starting salary range for this role is $61,272 to $67,109, commensurate with the candidate’s relevant experience, capabilities and skills and in alignment with internal equity.

• Flexible location. You can work from any location in the United States as long as your location allows you to complete the demands of the position and mission. All staff are required to travel at least two times per year to internal team retreats. (Accommodations to this requirement will be made only in exceptional circumstances.) We currently have staff in Washington, DC, New York, Massachusetts, California, Virginia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Georgia, Utah, Kentucky, Washington, Florida, Illinois, Arizona, New Jersey, New Hampshire, Vermont, Colorado, Maryland, Wisconsin, Louisiana, Tennessee, and Texas. We offer shared workspaces in many of these locations for staff members who enjoy working in an office environment.
