    Descrição

We seek a capable, motivated, and collaborative scientist with experience in computational biology, biostatistics, data science, or spatial data analysis to join our biomarkers of breast carcinogenesis study team at Silent Spring Institute. This is a great opportunity to take on a central role in a novel research project exploring the spatiotemporal biomarkers of effect that precede chemically induced tumor development. Our goal is to better understand how environmental chemicals cause breast cancer, identify risky exposures, and support prevention. Our high-impact research team is proud to train a new generation of scientists for careers in toxicology and public health.

    Job Overview:

Founded in 1994, Silent Spring Institute is the leading scientific research organization dedicated to uncovering the links between chemicals in our everyday environment and women’s health. We are a collaborative multi-disciplinary team with expertise in toxicology, exposure science, epidemiology, data science, chemistry, social science, and communications. We lead studies funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Environmental Protection Agency, and other federal agencies and collaborate with investigators at University of Massachusetts Amherst, Harvard, UC Berkeley, Brown, and elsewhere. This new hire will analyze multiplex immunofluorescence microscopy data to determine patterns of changes in molecular markers over time following chemical exposure. Key activities will include development and implementation of statistical image analysis approaches, manuscript preparation, public communications, proposal development, and work on other ongoing studies at Silent Spring. This is a great opportunity to develop new knowledge and skills with mentors at Silent Spring and collaborators in spatial biology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Spatial Technologies Unit and Massachusetts General Hospital. This position is based in Newton, MA.

    Responsibilities:

Our research positions require great versatility in support of the Institute’s transdisciplinary research and our communications, community engagement, and policy programs.

    • Lead data analysis and peer-reviewed manuscript preparation for an exciting NIH-funded study into the early changes that chemicals cause in the mammary gland that lead to tumor development.
    • Learn about chemical effects on the breast and mechanisms of breast carcinogenesis and contribute to papers and new proposals in this space.
    • Contribute to other computational toxicology projects at Silent Spring.
    • Provide additional research support, including literature review and assistance preparing presentations, manuscripts, and proposals for federal and foundation grants.
    • Speak about environmental health issues with community audiences.

    The ideal candidate will have:

    • Ph.D. in biostatistics, computational biology, or data science.
    • Experience conducting scientific research and authoring peer-reviewed scientific publications.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
    • High energy, creativity, curiosity, attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to work independently within a multidisciplinary team.

    Bonus skills:

    • Background in toxicology, mammary gland biology, or carcinogenesis.
    • Knowledge of chemical risk assessment methods.

    Benefits:

Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience ($70,000-90,000). We are currently working in hybrid mode, with an expectation of two days per week in our office. Silent Spring offers generous benefits including health and dental insurance, four weeks of vacation, 12 sick days, two personal days and 12 holidays per year, and professional development support. We offer free on-site parking or reimbursement for MBTA pass.
