Supervising Attorney - Domestic Violence Law Project 

 

Summary:


The Supervising Attorney will lead and manage the staff of the Domestic Violence Law Project. The Supervising Attorney is responsible for supervision of junior legal staff, support staff, interns, volunteers and pro bono attorneys including training and oversight on all legal matters.  Supervising Attorney will also conduct presentations and trainings to community based organizations and other service based providers.  Supervising Attorney will be responsible for general office management and oversight. The Supervising attorney may also represent domestic violence victims in family offense, custody and visitation cases in Family Courts in New York City providing a holistic range of services.   


 

Essential Job Functions:


Provide supervision to staff attorneys on all essential duties of staff attorney. Attend court appearances with staff attorneys as necessitated by the experience level of each staff attorney as determined by the supervising attorney.  Review all legal documents and materials prepared by staff attorneys to ensure they meet legal standard of legal profession.

Provide general supervision to support staff, volunteers and student interns. Monitor workload and work product of staff to ensure job performance level according to each individual’s skill, experience and responsibility

Conduct hiring of student interns, volunteers and support staff and staff attorneys.  Plan, assign and direct training and workload of students interns, volunteers, support staff and staff attorneys.

Conduct long-term strategic planning in conjunction with Senior Director, Legal Programs. 

Oversee general office management.

Lead DVLP bi-weekly staff meetings

Maintain availability to staff for supervision and direction on day-to day basis in addition to individual caseload.

Provide legal representation on family law matters including: in-depth interviews with victims of domestic violence, compiles history and investigates to corroborate allegations, Drafts all legal documents and makes all court appearances with victims of domestic violence, Prepares witnesses and client for court appearances. Responsible for assisting clients with a holistic range of services,

Required skills: 

Must possess strong oral and written communications skills, including the ability to convey legal concepts to lay people and junior staff attorneys.  The ability to write, edit and proofread routine reports, court documents, case notes, pleadings and correspondence in a clear, concise and effective manner is essential.  Must be creative and have critical thinking skills.  Must be a persuasive and effective public speaker.   Prior experience organizing and executing group trainings and information exchanges.  Must possess demonstrated appropriate communications skills with client populations, colleagues and court staff.  Demonstrated problem-solving, prioritizing, time management, team-building and organizational skills required.  Must be familiar with legal services, resources and procedures available in New York City.  Must possess a knowledge and understanding of economic issues facing domestic violence victims, including but not limited to housing, public benefits and child support.   Strong networking skills and the ability to develop and maintain relationships with various individuals, organizations and government agencies is essential.  Demonstrated ability to lead teams and organizations effectively.  A strong commitment to working exclusively with victims of domestic violence is required.  


Qualifications:  

Must have a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from an accredited law school, be admitted to the New York State Bar and have four years of related experience.  At least two years experience litigating cases before the family courts in State of New York or comparable courts required. Must have experience supervising and training junior attorneys.  Must have prior experience in and/or thorough knowledge of family law, crisis intervention, criminal justice system, working with victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, family violence, poverty law, feminist law and/ social justice work.
