    Position Title: Accounting Manager

    Location: Remote (USA)

    Salary: $78,000 - $85,000

    Status: Full-time, salaried, exempt

    Reports to: Controller

    ABOUT US:

    Since 1988, Rainforest Trust has been safeguarding imperiled tropical habitats and saving endangered species by supporting rights-based conservation measures such as affirming and securing rights to Indigenous or Traditional Territories, recognizing Conserved Areas (OECMs), and establishing traditional Protected Areas, including those with co-management of Indigenous or local communities. Working in partnership with local organizations and communities, we have protected more than 56 million acres of vital habitat across Latin America, Africa, Asia and the Pacific.     HOW YOU'LL CONTRIBUTE TO OUR MISSION:

    • Strengthen financial operations by ensuring vendor partnerships are managed with accuracy, timeliness, and compliance in order to build trust with external parties and safeguard organizational resources.
    • Elevate the integrity of financial data by overseeing accurate journal entries, ensuring proper revenue and expense recognition, reviewing the general ledger, and completing reconciliations to provide leadership with reliable information for decision-making.
    • Protect donor intent and enhance organizational accountability by leading the compliant management of project funds, ensuring accurate allocations, transparent reporting, and responsible stewardship.
    • Maintain the organization's financial integrity by supporting timely ME/YE closes, producing reliable reports, and preparing accurate documentation to contribute to an efficient and clean audit, and a transparent, compliant Form 990.
    • Safeguard the organization's reputation and brand by leading the charitable registration process, coordinating with third-party partners to ensure accurate and timely filings, and maintaining strong ratings with Charity evaluators, such as Charity Navigator.
    • Streamline and strengthen accounting processes by leveraging technology and identifying opportunities to drive greater efficiency, accuracy, and scalability across the finance functions. Ensure the effective financial stewardship of grant funding by overseeing compliance with grant requirements, monitoring allocations and expenditures, and partnering with program and philanthropy teams to maximize impact and alignment with donor expectations.

    TO SUCCEED IN THIS ROLE, WE'RE HOPING YOU'LL HAVE:

    • Exceptional technical accounting expertise. You are well-versed in preparing and reviewing journal entries, and you conduct detailed general ledger reviews to identify and resolve errors.Your strong grasp of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and deep nonprofit accounting experience, especially in fund accounting and managing donor-restricted net assets, enables you to maintain compliance and deliver reliable financial reporting.
    • Strong vendor and systems management experience. You have a successful track record of managing relationships with external vendors and service providers, ensuring compliance with contracts, policies, and best practices. You bring proven experience implementing, managing, and optimizing AP automation platforms such as Ramp Bill Pay and Bill.com, enabling greater efficiency and accuracy in financial operations.
    • Proven ability managing complex workflows, including state charity registrations and compliance deadlines. You're experienced in identifying and re-engineering inefficient processes and driving continuous improvement in financial operations.You consistently produce high-quality work, thanks to your strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy. You have a solid track record of meeting deadlines and improving departmental efficiency, all while navigating complex accounting and compliance requirements.
    • Collaborative approach to cross-functional work. You thrive in collaborative environments and have experience working across departments, particularly with program staff and fundraisers/donor services, to align financial management with mission outcomes. You understand how to navigate the complexities of tracking multiple funding sources and project budgets with varying restrictions. You're a capable team leader who knows how to delegate effectively, provide constructive feedback, and ensure accountability. You also invest in staff development, using coaching and mentoring to support the growth and performance of team members.
    • Robust technical proficiency. You're an intermediate to advanced user of accounting software, including Sage Intacct and ERP systems, and adept at leveraging advanced spreadsheet functions. You stay current with emerging technologies and automation tools, continuously enhancing systems to support evolving finance needs.
    • Strong understanding of the grant lifecycle. You have hands-on experience managing the full grant cycle, from proposal budgeting and fund tracking to financial reporting. Your analytical skills help you navigate complex grant requirements, track eligible expenditures, and ensure the proper use of restricted funds in alignment with donor intent and compliance standards.

    WORKING CONDITIONS AND TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

    Rainforest Trust is a remote first organization and the incumbent will be expected to work primarily from home with an excellent internet connection, though part-time office space may be available in Washington DC.

    Occasional national and/or international travel may be required for organizational meetings and other events.

    ANTICIPATED SALARY

    The salary range for this position is $78,000-$85,000 commensurate with experience. This range applies to U.S based hires. This base compensation range represents the anticipated low and high range of wages for this position. Salaries will vary and will be based on various factors, such as candidate's qualifications, skills, competencies, and proficiency for the role.
